CRT
CRT is the cheapest technology, and produces the best picture. But they're very large and very heavy. And I don't think they're available in sizes that large.

LCD & Plasma (aka "flat-panels")
These are the most expensive, and are available in your size range. They have very good pictures.
They are very thin, allowing them to be easily wall-mounted, freeing up floor space. Older versions had problems with viewing angles, refresh rates, and picture burn-in, but current versions do not. Prices on these have been dropping at a fast rate lately (example).

Rear Projection
Rear projection sets can have different underlying technologies, including CRT, LCD, DLP, and who knows what else. They are available in large sizes. They are thinner & lighter than equivalent CRT's, but thicker & heavier than equivalent flat panels. They are cheaper than flat-panels. They tend to have viewing angle issues - the picture is washed-out when viewed at an angle. They tend to be not as bright as the other technologies too.

And one piece of advice - I strongly suggest you buy from Costco. Their return policy is a HUGE piece of mind when purchasing something that expensive.

Go to a local store and take a look at some of the TVs.

I was all set to buy a rear-projection, but after actually looking at them, I decided that I couldn't live with the viewing angle issues.

Also, Costco has some models available in-store that they do not make available online (and vice-versa).

I have a Samsung 50" DLP, and have had no problems with viewing angle issues. I'd be more concerned with the effects of ambient light with a plasma than viewing angle with DLPs.
While a plasma may appear brighter at first (eye of the beholder in which you like better) plasmas fade over time. A four year old plasma set is likely to be 50% as bright as on the day you first plugged it in. This is due to the technology-the noble gases used to create the picture break down over time, and there is no fix.
With DLP, you have the issue of replacing the bulb every 3 or 4 years-but this is a $300 repair at today's prices. When you consider the extra size and quality you get from DLP, the bulb cost seems worth it. Samsung 50" 1080p DLP at Circuit City now for around 1700. For a Samsung 46" LCD 1080p, they charge 2700. Best Buy has a Samsung 50" plasma for 2800, butit is 720p, not 1080p.

Thanks tongue.gif

I listened to garsh’s advice, and I talked with some tech who work at these Electronics store. I was told the same about the bulb issue but I was not quite sure what to do at the moment.

Costco nearby my house has a Samsung 67" DLP 1080p, $2999.99 + tax and shipping & handling. I will get this one at the end of the week-end

again, Thanks tongue.gif

Oop,
I need to buy a small TV around 19” to play video game. If you guys found some good deals, please tell

thanks tongue.gif

Yeah if you don't mind the (possibly) bad ethics of returning the TV to Costco when the bulb blows, there's little risk. But that is a beast of a TV to schlep around!

I have a 46" Samsung DLP and love it. I purchased it in Oct.'05. Same size LCD or Plasmas were much more expensive then, but cost wasn't my only determining factor.

In doing my research I weighed all the pros & cons of the different technologies available and how they pertained to my situation. The DLP can have issues with viewing angles and what's called the rainbow effect, however my wife & I watch about 8-9 feet from the set and viewing angle is not an issue. The rainbow effect is a non-issue to our eyes. When I first got the set I would see it, but that was when I forced myself to see it. The process gave me a headache so I don't do that anymore lol.gif I actually like the idea of changing the bulb every 3-4 years. Some may see it as an expense they could live without, but, in a way, I see it as getting a new TV every 3-4 years.

So, if you haven't purchased a set yet my advice would be to look at the pros & cons of each technology and how they pertain to your situation, not someone else's. Figure out what means more to you, look at the sets in the stores & don't rush into a purchase.

Oh, and I purchased my set with an extended 2 warranty. I rarely purchase extended warranties, but this one came with a bulb replacement and the warranty cost less than the bulb. I just need to remember to get the replacement before the warranty runs out smile.gif

thanks.

I love the Samsung 67” DLP at Costco.
Got this one but I forgot the extended warranty.
I will come back to Costco to talk about it. I hope I could make price adjustment with the extended warranty without any problem

Very cool SoY. I hope you're enjoying it.
Wow, 67" is big. 50" was the largest i was considering with the room it was gong in. 67", for me, would be way too overbearing.....unless I knock down that wall....hmmmmmmm biggrin.gif lol.gif
SoY
Yes, it is true.
67” does not look big in the store but when we put it in the truck ...
woah ... hiding.gif

we really need 4 people to take it to the room ... blushing.gif

then the house looks too small, everything need to clean up ... no flower vase ... nothing near by look nice with the new TV set ... but I love to watch TV and DVD on this monster tongue.gif

Costco doesn't have extended warranties. You don't need one when you buy from Costco. Instead, they have an unlimited satisfaction guarantee.

If at any time you are unsatisfied with your purchase, just take it back to Costco and they will refund your entire purchase price. You don't even have to save the box. That's much, much better than any warranty. smile.gif
