If you are not a member of FWF, you probably missed out on this.
Amex is giving out ridiculous CL increases with their online request form.
If you have an Amex go do it now.
I went from $6K --> $15K with a credit score of 650 and tons of debt.
(Nothing to be proud of)

Edit: This is freaking ridiculous. You can do it again!!!! credit to: wmspringer (sorry i forgot ealier)

Do you have the link to the form?
QUOTE(threeuncle @ 12-5-06, 2:27pm)

Do you have the link to the form?
- Log into your online account at http://www.americanexpress.com
- Click on the "Card Activity" link for the card you'd like to increase.
You may need to click on the box with the arrow to the left of the picture of the card before you'll see this link - Under the "Credit Line Summary" section, there is a link for "Request a Credit Increase". Click it.
I just went from 18k -> 25k. I was just about to hit my limit too. Thanks!

Yes.
AMOUNT OWED / CREDIT AVAILABLE = UTILIZATION = FACTOR IN FICO SCORE
so... high credit available decreases utilization = better FICO.
of course there are tons of other factors, but this is ONE of them.

How convenient, I just applied for an Amex Hilton Honors a couple of days ago. Now I have to wait to get it, so hopefully this deal is going on for another week. Thanks for the info, this is very useful.

What if your AmEx is through
BoA
or another bank? I am assuming that this is only through American Express website, so I'm not going to try.

It will probably still work. I keep track of all of my Amex cards through the website, including my Costco card. I think it's worth a shot if you're interested. You'll have to create a login id and setup your card for web access.

Wow...now I wish I'd pushed it, instead of just going from 9k to 15k!
Too bad I don't have another AMEX to try this with..
went from 10k to 30k, should put a higher limit. thanks
Got shot down going from 27 to 40k... said they needed me to send in proof of income (aka 2 years tax returns)

If you get shot down can you just try a lower number, or do you only get one chance?
I JUST ordered one and it's in the mail. They only gave me a $3k limit, and I'd like it to be much higher.

Why would it be a higher score if you don't use your card? Wouldn't a credit card company want you to carry debt? So my discover card with a $15,000 limit that I charge nothing on raises my score?
You should really consult a financial adviser, but my FWF knowledge has taught me this:
The amount of AVAILABLE CREDIT you have raises your credit score because it is potentially the amount of money the credit industry is willing to trust you with. Also, it is not only calculated using one credit card, it is the total of all your credit cards. So if your credit cards total is like $50K in credit, the CC companies sees you as being more trustworthy... unless you are using like $40K of that $50K, then they pretty much will brand you as a high risk.
I don't think they really care if you don't use your card or not. They just sit in the bush and hope that one day you'll loose your brains and go on a crazy shopping spree and can't afford to pay off your debt and the'll shoot you down with interest......
If you have other credit cards, call them up and MAX out your limit with them. However, be aware that whenever you ask for a credit limit increase, you are putting yourself at risk for a "hard pull", which counts negatively on your credit report because it is considered a credit inquiry. However, the benefits outweigh the risk.
Easily gone from 15K to 25K

Thanks!

Credit score is not the only index they check when you ask for CL increase or apply for a credit card. Many other indexex, especially the history with the credit card bank, are checked too. Credit score is the most important one only if you don't have credit card or business history with the bank.

There is one potential drawback to carrying high CLs that I consider regularly... If your income does not justify those credit limits, it is possible that a mortgage or auto lender would deem you a higher risk because you have the potential to spend well beyond your means. Most cc companies now allow you to reopen accounts within a certain amount of time after closing them, so that you can get around this issue.

Yeah, especially with Amex, they care a LOT about your history with them. You can't screw up your credit report either since they do check it, but as far as increases, etc, go it's all about history.
i just got my business card 2 months ago
it only had 5 grand limit
asked for 25k and they gave it to me
Thanks.....
Were your limit increases instant? They gave me the 7-10 day thing instead, probably because it's my mother's joint account and she's not a citizen (Amex always seemed to give my individual lines much easier increases whereas they always made it a pain for her card even though she has a better FICO than me).
QUOTE(Cirrus @ 12-27-06, 12:20pm)

My personal card was instant.
My business card was not.
My Business card said 7-10 days also
but if you click the link to see if
your card is approved it will tell you
if your limit was approved,it shows the orgianl date the card was approved
then below that it just showed approved and the date of the 26th
but did not say what it was for. mine took about
24 hours to show up and about 36 hours
for it to reflect online the new limit..
got the orginal email about the limit increase request
but no email yet saying it was approved.
i like what i see now

Sheesh, I feel silly sticking with modest increases...
OTOH, they go better with my modest income!
lol, Amex finally approved my two increase requests...
So now my Blue for Students card has a 30K line, hahaha...their worst card with a huge line attached...beautiful =)
And my Starwood card where I'm just an AU also got hiked to 30K (which was my request). So now I have access to $60K of revolving lines with Amex, plus my Platinum Charge Card...dang.
Just worried about financial review now, lol, but I didn't lie about income or anything so worst case I guess I'll just have to find all my stupid financial docs and send them to Amex. I'm pretty sure I actually underestimated our household income by a little just to be safe.
Anyways, my utilization ratios are going to have a hard time ever going past single digits now, hahaha.
All I need now is for Amex to offer me 0% for life and it's all good =P
Hmm... 7-10 days response on one personal card, written income verification on another. Oh well...
woot!
$30k credit on blue cash, bwahahaahha.
I got limited to $25K CL on two of the three cards. My 3rd card didn't get approved for an increase.
Just be prepared when amex hits you with a financial review.

Just be prepared when amex hits you with a financial review.
What happens then?
They FREEZE all your accounts and will be treated EXTREMELY RUDELY by the financial review department. You will have to submit last three statements of all your bank accounts showing lots of money in them and last two years of tax returns as well. Until you do that and they lift the freeze, no one will be kind to you at all. Unfortunately, I had to go through this about two years ago, but all turned out well after I gave them what they wanted. VERY UNPLEASANT experience overall.
