I changed hard drive on my dimension b110. It starts up with the dell logo. Then status thing at the bottom runs. After it reaches the end, it stays on the screen for a while. Then a new screen states "primary drive 1 not found", "strike the f1key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility".
I suppose I should hit f2 and make some changes, but what? I hit f1 and it goes through the normal startup.
What to do?
Is the drive formatted? Do you need to reinstall the operating system?

Is the new drive set to "Cable Select"?

WinXP home installed after running through the problem mentioned in op. Still gets same problem after each re/start.
It is in CS. I will add a second hd inside the system and probably hook up another through usb. Should the main C hard drive be set on master?
Your PC might be looking for a drive that use to exist?
For example was your original drive ATA and your new drive SATA?
Therefore your Primary HD (ATA) setting might be still set for "AUTO" and the PC is still looking for that drive while you are using the SATA Primary Channel.
Or
Since your drive is set to CS, the primary/secondary position is determined by how the IDE cable is connected to the HD.
Is it possible that you connected your new drive to the secondary position and your PC is still looking for the old HD that was connected to the primary position?
go into setup (I think its F2) and go into drive configuration.
I think there are 4 options but I could be wrong:
SATA Primary HD
SATA Secondary HD
Primary HD (for ATA HD)
Secondary HD (for ATA HD)
Make sure that the 3 options you are not using are set to "OFF"
Was the drive formatted with the CD that came with it? That can cause problems when installing XP.
I installed the 2nd hd and it started up regularly. I guess there was some setting for 2 hds.

If the message disappeared it means the BIOS was looking for the primary drive (which happened to be your 2nd drive). Your main drive is connected to the secondary channel.
in bios setup, you might've told it to look for Primary 1 as your bootup HDD. However, you pulled that hdd out, and by hitting F1 to continue, it goes looking for other bootable drives.
