On a client's laptop whenever you click on a PDF file a window opens that says the file is of unknown file type "Hurricane Katrina". Going into Folder Options/File Types and changing the "Opens With" to Adobe does work to be able to open and read the file. But the message under the PDF file type remains that the file type has been changed from the default of Hurricane Katrina, choose restore to return it to it's default setting. If I let it restore then come back to the "Change" button again it will again say that it opens with Hurricane Katrina and the highlighted program will be MS Office/Word. It will also say that it's (PDF) Protocol is Hpertext Transfer Protocol and it's Type is Hurricane Katrina.

I have no idea how this change was made and I don't seem to be able to get it back to where it should be. Anyone else run into this?

Note: System is clean of spyware and no abnormalities are found with HiJackThis.

Hmmm...

Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> File Types will show you all the registered file types. Perhaps you need to delete the current PDF entry and recreate it.

maybe this would work?

Right click on any PDF. Goto "Open With" then "Choose Program"

Select the program (acrobat) and check the "Always use the selected program for this type of file" box.

That's what I did the first time before going into Folder Options to check.

I will try the delete and recreate when I go over there tonight.

Maybe try to uninstall / reinstall acrobat or acrobat reader. Does this happen with every PDF document or just the one? if it's just the one maybe the file is damaged, or not a PDF document at all.

I agreee with Alan - uninstall the program and make sure that nothing is associated with the pdf file type. I would even reboot, then reinstall and let Acrobat take care of the associations in their install process. If this fails, then the problem may be spyware or a virus.

Yes it is with every PDF. She has the free Reader 7.0 installed. I couldn't make it over there tonight so I'll do the uninstall tomorrow.

I just wonder how the change happened in the first place.
