Doesn't necessarily have to be a deal, and doesn't have to be professional quality. Just a good photo printer (better than average) that is reliable and not too expensive on ink use.
Does that make sense?
I've got some Epson RX620 multifuctions for sale

Seriously, I loved our canon IP4000 (no longer available, replaced by the ip4200). The drawback to the canons and some (mostly the cheaper) epsons is they use dye based ink which doesn't last as long. The better Epsons (and I don't know which camp the rx620 falls in) use pigmented ink which is rated for 100+ years. That's why we bought a new Epson R1800 (probably overkill for you as it's 500+ and wide format) for our photo printing to replace our canon.
The nice thing with the canons is a bunch of them have built in duplexers and dual paper trays, so you can print two sided as well as keep both photo and plain paper in it.
i have an epson rx500 or something of that sort.. i dont remember exactly cus i am not home... but i dont like it.. picture quality is poor and it prints wierd...
I have an HP photosmart 245. It is user friendly. I think I like it- but I use it so sparingly because I don't want to buy ink. It only prints 4x6s I think. It takes all kinds of memory types. It's cute.
http://www.epinions.com/Hewlett_Packard_Ph...lay_~full_specsI find shutterfly.com to be the best way to get prints lately.

Not yet. Just figured that some of the tech savy people here might have some opinions before I go searching.
I have hated epson since one of their printers I bought back in 98. I printed maybe 5 color pages on it because the print heads were always clogged and the thing was louder than a freight train.
To this day, I cringe at the tought of buying another epson. However, my latest HP hasn't really converted me either.
Don't forget about quality photo paper as well. I've used some generic photo paper and the photos turned out streaky or had noticeable defects.
Generally I tend to stick with compatible stuff. (Epson printer = Epson photo paper).
Epson paper works great in Canon printers as well, and is cheaper. OfficeMax sometimes has it B1G1 so we stock up then
OD has Buy One Get One KODAK premium high gloss photo paper 100 pk for $13, so for $13 you get 200 4x6 sheets.

I have an HP all in one and they are crap. The printheads die after 1 year. There are 4 of those at $35. each...I can't recommend any brand really.

I use Costco one hour photo :-)
I find the quality and price-per-picture of the Epson Picturemate to be far ahead of the competition. Honestly can't tell the difference between a printed picture and what you would get from a photo processing place. This may be de to the fact that it is a six-color printer.
I bought it for $29AR at Office Depot last year in a sweet deal but you may be lucky enough to find someone who got a similar deal for whom the novelty has now worn off.
I have an Pixma IP3000. I love the pictures it prints but I think your needs will dictate which printer to buy and how much to spend. What I wanted was fast, relatively cheap, good quality prints. If they don't last even 10 years I won't be terribly upset as I rarely print out pictures, mostly look at them on my screen. I remember about a year ago when I was looking for a photo printer, the Canon Pixma series was the only one that I found to match my needs.
I have always liked Epson for photo quality and durability. Lately, I have started to use Costco for large prints - you can download their printer drivers on-line and really tailor the print to the printer for best color rendition.
For a few 4 x 6's, I use the Epson Photomate, and as an earlier poster said, it does a great job. Hard to tell the difference.
