I recently bought a new burner the NEC ND-3540A. When i insert a a Sony DVD+r the name of the drive renames itself to CD Drive but the picture shows DVD-Rom. When i take out the DVD it says DVD-RW Drive. I thought that it could be that the burner doesnt take that DVD but when i put in a Teon DVD-R it also does the same thing. This was happening to my NEC 2100 too so i changed the firmware to 2500 and it still didnt work so i bought the ND-3540A. It still doesnt work.. The NEC 2100 worked a while ago but not anymore. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

Thanks!

Is it not letting you burn DVD's or something? IIRC WinXP will not recognize and name a DVD unless it's already burned. At which point you probably have already given it a lable.

So just burn your stuff and don't worry what Windows calls it - it will work.

Its saying i dont have any media in my DVD-RW when there is a dvd in there already. I know its a fresh disc because i just opened the package and i tried 3 or 4 of em.

Where are you trying to read them, if you put a blank disc in the drive and then try to access it with Windows Explorer you WILL get an error. Unless you are using packet writing software of some kind.

If you are using Nero or some other CD/DVD burning program like that and it's saying there's no blank disc then we are talking different problem.

I agree with Narc & Arkayz. Put a blank media in the drive and Windows really doesn't know what to do with it sometimes. What CD/DVD burning program(s) do you have installed? Does the software recognize the drive & blank media?

I have been using DVD Shrink 3.2 to back up my DVD. When the screen pops up that says to insert the dvd+r or dvd-r it says unknown even though i have a dvd+r or dvd-r in there. It never used to be like that but i dont know why its acting up now.

I think DVD Shrink uses a Nero plugin. If you try burning the DVD w/ Nero are the discs recognized?

EDIT: Does Nero recognize the drive?
jon2249
Yes Nero recognizes the drive but when just burning with Nero it always fails 1/2 way in. I have to use DVD Shrink for some reason i never gotten nero to work by itself.
NARC
That's really random; I've never heard of anything like that.

You may want to go to cdfreaks.com and ask there - they've got a ton of info.
