Was thinking about getting the hardware to setup my computer to record TV (plus my dad wants me to copy some old tapes to DVD) Any recommendations on the best setup?
Alan
I have the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 PCI Card in my HTPC and I've been very happy with it. Narc posted a deal on it here.

If you don't have Windows Media Center Edition you can get a software program like:
Sage - http://www.sage.tv
Beyond TV - http://www.snapstream.com
myHTPC - http://www.myhtpc.net

HTPCnews.com is a great site devoted to the Home Theatre PC. Check it out. Be sure to visit this page: Links to important HTPC software

Thanks! Those software programs look pretty neat; I'll be sure to try the free trials once the card arrives :-)

I have the same card as Alan.

I use GBPVR (www.gbpvr.com) which is freeware (yay!) and works well for me. I run it with an addon called "comskip" so it can mark commercials relatively well and it can download program listings up to two weeks in advance.

Also check out www.shspvr.com - the guy who runs it is somehow affiliated with Hauppauge and they have a great forum section with a lot of unreleased builds of the Hauppauge software.

Sounds like lots of neat stuff to check out.. thanks guys!

This?

That's the one....but it's better through

I find it's not 100% accurate, but good enough for most shows. I think it also makes a file that a program called VideoRedo can read so you can manually go through and verify/cut commercials and save it as a different mpeg with the commercials cut

I can't wait to get this thing set up :-)

Card should be here Wednesday from Amazon..

grr...got GBPVR installed, brought up live TV...can't get the mini-guide to come up or the captioning to come on

(I do have captioning selected in the configuration menu)

grrr...I've just been told that card doesn't do captions

Now I gotta open up the computer and send it back..

I don't use min to watch live tv, so dunno about the mini-guide (I search shows out manually a week or two in advance).

Didn't think captions was that important (not a feature I use, so unaware it didn't support it). Sorry it didn't work out with the card!

When you're deaf, it is wink.gif I'll use the card mainly to record shows in advance, but I need the captioning, so I'll probably buy the 250 instead.
