I am really looking for something nice, but i dont really want to spend alot.

What is the best you can get for the cheapest.

I hear you can always pickup old ibm thinkpads for 50 or 100 dollars depending on HD space and speed and screen type/size, but i was looking for something a little nicer.

i also saw a dell for 399.99

who's got some better deals on cheap laptops out there and/or what is the best deal on these you have heard?

Well, if you're waiting for the sub-$400 range, then you just need to wait for a price mistake. That recent Dell 700m for $399 (aafes) was a price mistake. A very nice one for those who were able to take advantage of it.
