but i don't know if my device has upgraded automatically or i have purchased a new one with 3.1.9LsC included.
While you didn't realize the harm in doing so at the time, connecting your brand new PAP2 to the internet was a bad move. Whether or not it came w/ 3.1.9 out of the box, upon sychronizing w/ Vonage, it would still perform a firmware upgrade, and it would load in Vonage settings. If that happened, you've unfortunately wasted your golden opportunity to unlock the adapter.
QUOTE(Fiku @ 7-6-06, 1:59pm)

any idea? or i mus wait anyway?
thanks
There's no harm in attempting the unlock process. If by some miracle the adapter did not synchronize w/ Vonage, you'll still have your 1 shot. Otherwise, you're in the same boat as all others w/ used PAP2's containing 3.1.9 firmware.

On Windows XP, I've used "SolarWinds" TFTP server and Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) as the web server. IIS comes w/ XP Pro (although not installed by default) but not XP Home. You can also use a windows version of Apache for a free HTTP server. As for DNS, take a look at "SimpleDNS."
In the post above, "Apache" was mentioned as a free HTTP server. Doing a Google search on "

I don't understand what "

Whether or not a program is a "good one" is subjective. So long as it works, it's "good." For DNS, you can go w/ SimpleDNS or SimpleDNS plus. A 14 day trial of SimpleDNS Plus is available
here.
As for TFTP, I've used

I'm not sure how much it really matters, but since you're installing this for unlocking purposes, you may as well use:
Network Domain:
vonage.netServer Name:
httpconfig.vonage.netThen setup those domains w/ SimpleDNS too.
like in your thread i istalled simple dns plus and when i go to give the network domain and server name it ask me not those but number ip's what's wrong?

I bought a new PAP2 3.1.9LSc from compusa and started off from page 4 to unlock the adapter. When i was doing the factory reset **** and 78783# the IVR replied 1 to confirm and 2 exit. is that normal. It is a brand new adapter. It didnt ask for a password.
OK, so I've followed the guide with my 3.1.9Lsc adapter.
I go the usual stuff working, it took the 2.0.09 sipura software, the power LED turned red. On next reboot I could see in the DNS logs that requests were coming from sipura device so I knew it was running 2.0.9 Then it requested plain XML file. It grabbeed it, but when I tried to login to web interface with ADMIN or USER none of the 1234 and 4321 passwords worked. Then I fed it the flat text xml with the last line to upgrade to SP2K-PAP2.bin. After three reboots it finally took the upgrade, the Power LED turned Blue. I can see in the logs that now requests are coming from linksyspap device so I assume it is running 3.1.3 (this was in the SP2k-PAP2.bin fiile.) PRoblem is I'm stuck now. It will not load web interface (timeout) the IVR menu doesn't come up. After I press **** I don't get menu ( I can hear dial tones) any more keypad presses and I get fast dialtone. How do I proceed from here?

If the adapter has never connected to Vonage, it wouldn't have a Vonage assigned USER password loaded into it. Thus, the behavior above sounds fine.

If you absolutely can't get into IVR mode, it sounds like may have a defective PAP2 (or your PAP2 failed to properly load in FW 3.1.3). If you manage to get back into IVR mode, perform another FACTORY RESET and repeat the ORIGINAL (fw 3.1.6 or lower) UNLOCK PROCESS listed in POST #4 of this thread. Otherwise, it sounds like your PAP2 needs to be exchanged as "defective." Walmart sells them these days, so you can always swap it there.

It's up to you whether to use your router's DHCP server or one running on the HTTP/TFTP/DNS PC. If you use your router as the DHCP server, you'll need to re-configure your PAP2's DNS server setting by pointing it to your DNS PC's IP Address. If you use your PC as the DHCP server, you likely won't need to re-configure your PAP2's DNS server setting.

If, in your last post, you're claiming you don't have IVR access, you can still factory reset your adapter using the web interface. Manually enter the following URL:
http://pap2_ip_address/admin/reset
Note: Replace "pap2_ip_address" with your PAP2's IP Address.
Then follow the procedure of POST #4 (FOUR). After that's done, your adapter will be re-unlocked, and the GPP_K value listed in your adapter will be the FACTORY FRESH GPP_K.

Thanks for all the help. unlocked the adapter. :-)
All is well now. I was able to get to the IVR menu after disconnecting Enet cable and powering down/up PAP2. From there on it was smooth sailing using basic procedure -> 2.0.9 sipura -> 3.1.3 linksys -> 3.1.8 sipura.
I've noticed that it takes a relatively long time after the adapter reboot for it to be alive again (respond to ping)
so I've set a ping to it running constantly in a command window, this way I could see it come up.
In sipura mode dialing first * will give a fast busy tone but keep dialing those stars and after 4th one you will get IVR prompt.
Fully unlocked adapter in SPA1001 mode. I wish the power LED was working but what the hell.
Just signed up for voipstunt, entered the settings into PAP2 and - voila, making free calls already, this is so cool.
I can now return my backup wally world PAP2 purchase since this 3.1.9 one unlocked just fine.
Thx everyone here and on broadbandreports for all the usefull info.

Hi All,
I have follwed ALL the exact steps here (I have the 3.1.9LSc bought from CompUSA - never connected to Vonage) and I can see the TFT log picking up the spa00000.xml file and then the Apache log confirming that the bin file was picked up and transferred to the PAP2.
The light does not turn RED for me - that's where I am stuck.
Almost instantly, the TFT log shows that the spa00000.xml was now requested from ZPoot6rAS ( a folder under TFTP) and that's where it hats as it does not find the file. I, then, created this folder and saved the modified spa0000.xml that includes the admin password info etc and it seems to grab it.
But, all of this is so quick - with no RED light indicator on the PAP2.
What do you reckon? Needless to say, I can't access the web control using the admin/user passwords.
Cheers!
P.S. I searched and noone has answered such a query here!

It sounds like you may have staged the wrong firmware file for your PAP2 to grab (or had it named incorrectly). Given that your Apache logs show that the file was picked up, the chances of the file being named incorrectly are slim. Open up the staged firmware file in WORDPAD. Does the beginning of the file start with the text "
LiNkSyS FiRmWaRe," "
SpA2000 FiRmWaRe," or something else?
I just hope that your adapter continues to request HTTP firmware upgrades. WITHOUT FACTORY RESETTING the adapter, does it still make HTTP requests?
If it does not, FACTORY RESET the adapter again. If it still doesn't make HTTP requests, this is unfortunately the equivalent of having had the adapter talk to Vonage, at which point your fastest recourse will be go back to CUSA and swap the PAP2 out for another one.

That's very strange. It should be making requests to SOMEWHERE via TFTP. I would recommend trying the following:
1) With your PAP2 connected DIRECTLY to your PC via a crossover cable, (install if necessary) and load up a PACKET SNIFFING program to see what traffic your PAP2 is sending/requesting. In the strange event your PAP2 is seeking TFTP files from a different server name, packet sniffing will reveal that, and you'll be able to resolve this issue by adding in the appropriate host name in your DNS server.
2) What happens if you try to FACTORY RESET the adapter? Are you able to do so, or does it prompt for a password (where none of the 5 known paswords work)?

Try
Ethereal*EDIT* When connecting your PAP2 directly to your PC (via the PC's ethernet port), turn on ICS (internet connection sharing) so that your PC acts as a DHCP server. Another option is to configure both the PAP2 and PC w/ static IP addresses (in the same sub-net) and set the PAP2's gateway to the IP Address of the PC.

Perhaps you're not waiting long enough for the light to turn red?
Perhaps the firmware file you're using is corrupted. Re-download the file and place it back in your HTTP directory. Also, if you have Apache logs showing a successful firmware file transmission, please post some clips of the logs to see if they shed any light on the situation.

Thanks TheDiggler!
Your information has been very helpful, however I have had issues with my unlock attempt.
I purchased the PAP2 from the CUSA deal last week. It was a 3.1.9c. I have created the web server (IIS), dns server (Simple DNS), and TFTP (Pumpkin). I have tested the dns servers as well as the web and tftp servers with another computer and everything appears to work and correct using the spoofed domain names.
As far as i know, my PAP2 has never been on the internet. I connect everything using a wired-only router, with disabled dhcp that does not have net access so I cannot see how it could have "accidently" got on the internet.
When I boot the PAP2 on, I can see that it downloads it's spa file from my tftp server 3 times, one from each of the following ports: 69, 21, and 2400. After that it does absolutely nothing. I check the IIS logs and cannot see an attempt to contact it by the PAP2. I have also used a packet scanner and cannot see any other requests made to the computer hosting the dns, web, and tftp server.
Also another difference is that the first thing I did was reset the PAP2 via the phone. When I did this I did not get a request for a password. The message I received was "1 to confirm, 2 to exit". I confirmed.
Is there anything I can do or am I SOL? Should I try to reset it and then attempt again? If not I will just return it.
I appreciate any help.
Diggler,
The Primary DNS server address that the IVR is telling me is 216.115.24.230, and I can't change it to my address because it's password protected in Sipoura 2.0.9d. Do you think this is the problem? Ethereal couldn't find any packets either.

Yeah, that's plenty of time. I'd say 3-5 minutes is more than enough time to wait.
QUOTE(xperiate @ 7-17-06, 3:50pm)

Well, I did what you suggested - downloaded the bin-file again and am using the fresh one. I reset the router, changed the DNS to 192.168.1.100 (my server running Simple DNS Plus). The TFT is fired on ports 69 and 2400. So that showed the file grab as below (my PAP2 is 192.168.1.102):
2006/07/17 12:38:26 Local [4160/4176]: Starting TFTP listener...

2006/07/17 12:40:19 Local [4160/5112]: Read request for /spa0016B692587C.xml completed successfully. 29456 bytes sent to the client 192.168.1.102
2006/07/17 12:40:20 Local [4160/4176]: Processing TFTP request on interface 192.168.1.100...
2006/07/17 12:40:20 Local [4160/896]: Read request for /PFNoo4H07i/spa0016B692587C.xml; mode=octet, from 192.168.1.102:2564
2006/07/17 12:40:21 Local [4160/896]: Read request for /PFNoo4H07i/spa0016B692587C.xml completed successfully. 728 bytes sent to the client 192.168.1.102
The above looks correct. I would for the time being remove the plain-text file from the /PFNoo4H07i/ directory (i.e. remove the directory altogether, or just rename it to /OLD_PFNoo4H07i/). That file anyway won't serve any purpose until after the adapter has been successfully loaded w/ SPA2K 2.0.9 firware. The fact that it gets read in during Linksys mode is meaningless (actually the failure of that file to be processed may be causing the adapter to halt the firmware upgrade).
QUOTE(xperiate @ 7-17-06, 3:50pm)

The Apache log is as below:
192.168.1.100 - - [17/Jul/2006:12:39:08 -0700] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 304 -
192.168.1.102 - - [17/Jul/2006:12:40:22 -0700] "GET /+0016B692587C/PAP2-bin-03-01-09-LSc.bin HTTP/1.0" 200 727592
Verify that your web server is in fact feeding the proper file. The best way to test this is to connect a 2nd PC to the fray (where that PC gets assigned a DHCP IP address from the same DHCP server as the PAP2, or if no DHCP is in use, set the other PC to something like 192.168.1.103). Then, on the 2nd PC, open up a web browser and navigate to:
CODE
http://192.168.1.100/+0016B692587C/PAP2-bin-03-01-09-LSc.bin
See if the file above successfully downloads. If it fails to download, you may have a firewall issue on the 192.168.1.100 PC. If it downloads, verify that the downloaded file is the correct file size (i.e. 727592 bytes). If you don't have a 2nd PC to use, try the URL on the 192.168.1.100 PC anyway. It won't help isolate firewall issues, but it will help determine whether the file is being HTTP transmitted properly.
QUOTE(xperiate @ 7-17-06, 3:50pm)

Do you suggest I keep the original Vonage spa0016B692587C.xml under /PFNoo4H07i/ (TFTP) or should I use the plain text as I am using at the moment (or just don't have anything there).
Putting the "original" encrypted config file in the /PFNoo4H07i/ (GPP_D) directory won't do you any good. Each GPP_D based config file is encrypted w/ a different GPP_K key (as explained
here). Remove any file from that directory though until AFTER you've loaded SPA2K firmware.

The Primary DNS server address that the IVR is telling me is 216.115.24.230, and I can't change it to my address because it's password protected in Sipoura 2.0.9d. Do you think this is the problem? Ethereal couldn't find any packets either.
That could very well be the problem. I'm surprised you can't change the DNS Server entry in your adapter though through the IVR. I wasn't aware of that option being password protected.
If you can't change the DNS Server setting, configure the IP address of your DNS Server's PC to be 216.115.24.230. That should get you past the DNS hurdles.

@Diggler. I'll give that a shot! Thanks.
Strangely I have the same problem as ajpatel:

Only thing is that my device has never shown be RED and I therefore am unsure if its SIPURA or not. But the DNS (using the IVR) is 216.115.24.230 and also password protected. What do you think?

Your adapter is clearly resolving DNS entries as it successfully accessed your TFTP server and also accessed your HTTP server (although it's not yet known whether this part was successful). It wouldn't have been able to access those hosts w/o DNS resolution, so that's not the root cause of your problem(s).
What are you using for a DHCP server, a router or one running on your PC? Just curious.
As far as verifying what firmware is loaded in your adapter, IVR command 150# reports the firmware version.

Hmm...I will try the 150# when I get home. Just to make things clear:
Before Un-locking: I change the DNS on the PAP2 to 192.168.1.100 using the IVR and one of the passwords 7756112
During the Un-Lock process and after it has (supposedly) grabbed the BIN file, when I query the PAP2, the DNS is 216.115.24.230 and is password protected. So, maybe there is a DNS issue this point onwards becuase there is no other activity on my internal network going forward.
Should I have my Server now work with 216.115.24.230 as its IP and change the DNS etc to work with this? Say, I get this going, what am I to expect?
I don;t know if it means anything, but the PAP2 is still responding to a ping on 192.168.1.102

I am using a Linksys WRT54GC as a router and DHCP Server. PAP2 and my laptop (acting as DNS Server) have reserved IP addresses. DNS, TFTP, FTP, HTTP are all forwarded to my laptop's IP address.

In the first quote above, you said that each time you factory reset the adapter, it performs the HTTP request (thus it performs the TFTP requests). DNS resolution is therefore not your issue as your adapter is DNS resolving the TFTP and HTTP servers. Those are the only servers it needs to resolve.
Your issue is simply that your PAP2 is failing to load & process the SPA2K firmware. As I wrote in a previous post, the fact that you've staged (in the proper GPP_D directory) a plain-text XML file while the PAP2 still has Linksys firmware on it may be the culprit.
Have you attempted the process w/ only the ORIGINAL XML file available (on the TFTP server) and nothing else? Have you also verified whether your Apache server is in fact properly HTTP transmitting the bin file to another machine (or even to itself on the same machine)? This is where you should be concentrating.. not on DNS issues which aren't affecting you.

I'm at a loss, the pap2 isn't asking for anything it seems. I'm stuck with Sipora 2.0.9d and no web interface. Someone PLEASE help. Is there any way of going back and trying again?

Thanks for you help.

Ok, I just checked this out: 216.115.24.230 is a DNS server at Vonage. So this means, my PAP2 gets the original Spa00000.xml and slaps it onto the PAP2 and changes its DNS from 192.168.1.100 to 216.115.24.230.

In the first quote above, I gave you a suggestion on how to proceed. You haven't responded whether you've set your DNS Server's PC to IP ADDRESS 216.115.24.230. Even if you haven't, packet sniffing should tell you what your PAP2 is attempting to do. However, in order for packet sniffing to succeed, you MUST have the PAP2 connected directly to your PC (or the PC and the PAP2 need to be connected to a HUB, not a SWITCH). If you have the PAP2 connected to your ROUTER and your PC conneted to your ROUTER, that will not work! The router is a "switch," and the "switch" will not expose the PAP2's traffic to your PC.
QUOTE(xperiate @ 7-17-06, 8:13pm)

Ok, I just checked this out: 216.115.24.230 is a DNS server at Vonage. So this means, my PAP2 gets the original Spa00000.xml and slaps it onto the PAP2 and changes its DNS from 192.168.1.100 to 216.115.24.230.
That is correct, but again, that is not an issue for you. You're able to set your DNS to 192.168.1.100, and the PAP2 is able to:
1) Grab the "origina" TFTP file
2) Grab the GPP_D update 1 file
3) Attempt to grab the firmware upgrade via HTTP
Had DNS resolultion been your problem, you'd have no entries of ANY OF THE ABOVE (or at least of items #2 & #3) appearing in your TFTP/HTTP logs.

You're doing STEP #8 of
Post #4, which is the wrong unlock procedure to follow for firmware 3.1.9. After you've unlocked your 3.1.9 adapter and have downgraded its firmware, then you can go back to POST #4 to re-unlock your adapter & extract your GPP_K value.

Where/how do I configure the dns servers address? I returned the other pap2 and re-tried the process, the new pap2 is stuck in the same place. Not making requests.
ethereal info is as follows:
source: 192.168.2.3 (pap2)
destination: broadcast
protocol: arp
who has 192.168.2.1 tell 192.168.2.3
I don't know how to interpret this, or even if the crossover connection is correct.

If it's got a red light, it sounds like you've successfully loaded Sipura firmware onto the adapter. I don't recall whether I've ever tested IVR access in SPA-2000 mode although the IVR works fine in SPA-1001 mode. That said, try accessing the IVR as follows:
1) Disconnect the ETHERNET CABLE from the PAP2
2) Power cycle the PAP2
3) Plug a standard telephone into LINE1 of the PAP2, not LINE2
4) Pick up the phone. What do you hear? Dead air? Fast Busy Signal? Standard Busy signal? (please answer this question)
5) No matter what sound is coming from the adapter, dial ****
6) Does the adapter now go into IVR mode? (please answer this question too)

Hi Diggler,
Your instructions are amazing and I'm almost there. Thanks
It worked all the way upto the step 6. I did confirm that the sipura FW is loaded by checking the IVR as per your instructions.
I do see a red light.
Does not matter how many times I power cycle the PAP2, it is not contacting the pc running the tftp/http/DNS servers to get the xml file specified in step 7. I used ethreal to monitor the traffic and dont see any requests from the pap2's IP address.
Checked my router and made sure that the PAP2 is assigned an IP from the DHCP.
Initially in step 3 we configured the pap2 to use the other pc as the DNS server.
Once the SIP FW is loaded in step 6, how does the SIPURA FW flashed PAP2 know to talk to my other PC to get the final XML file specified in step 7.
I see that you are replying to others in this forum a lot, thanks for taking in reading my question
Thanks,
Soufan
