It's only in beta now, but it looks like it's officially released.

I downloaded and installed it, now I just need to find other people to try it with.

Can this work with a proxy on port 80? Does anyone have a proxy (open or passworded) I can use?

This uses Jabber. So you can talk with Google Talk people with any other client that supports that protocol. GAIM for windows is one choice, or Fire or iChat for MacOS.

So it means you can set GAIM up for Google Talk? Too bad all my friends use MSN....

It's an open standard instead of a proprietary standard, which is the main reason why everyone is so happy about Google deciding to use it. Now anyone can create a client program to talk on Google Talk.

Yes, Jabber is what garsh said, and open standard IM protocol. But it's more like you setup GAIM for Jabber, and GoogleTalk also works with Jabber, so GAIM can talk to GoogleTalk via Jabber. Get it?

If it ever worked out it would be great. The idea is AIM and MSN and Yahoo would all add in Jabber support, so that all IM clients could interoperate.

I sifted through the help section for google talk and notice offline messaging involves sending gmail. Right now, I only use ICQ for offline instant messaging (not enough Y! friends) and would love to ditch it for something more mainstream.

Both if both use the Google client, only type if one or both don't.

I just installed it..well second time after I couldnt figure out how to change user names. I added Georgi55 so far. I am IamAddicted1@gmail.com
