I have favorite brands like the rest of you, but I'm always willing to give other brands a shot. The 3 Sony cordless phones my family has had (all the way from 2 channel to 900MHz) have all worked flawlessly. In fact, they're the only phones that last long enough to get to the point the battery needs to be replaced after some years.
We have a V-Tech 900MHz cordless and it sounds like junk. True it was only $50 (and I managed a $46 rebate) but it's not worth the $4 - keeps skipping channels too often and too much static. Even on their higher end $100+ phones that have more features than the $120 Sony phones they sound worse than the lowest Sony. I know others have had good luck with VTech, but for me I'll stay away. I'm also basing my experience on 2 sets my best friend has bought since I use his phone a lot.
We tried Panasonic once about 8 years ago and the 10 channel phone died in a year. This was a month after a Panasonic TV died after just 4 years. Recently, however, I tried Panasonic again because I got a good deal from Staples. I got the 2.4GHz set up with 3 bases (KX-TGA230B extensions). It took some getting used to at first since the buttons are too small for my ogre like hands, but I like the phone a lot now. It has this cool noise canceling feature where it pretty much eliminates all static when you're not talking. When I first started using it I hated it because I kept having to ask if the person on the other end was there because I heard nothing - now that's a clear line!
I would avoid
AT&T phones as I've heard about 1/3 of the reviews are bad - that's too a high percentage for me. Same with Siemens - they make good medical equipment, but horrible phones.
I would suggest sticking to Sony and Panasonic and get whichever one has the better deal.
