Internet porn sites will soon have the option of buying web addresses that end in "xxx" to let customers find them more easily while helping families block such sites from surfing children.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers agreed on Wednesday to allow addresses ending in .xxx instead of the more common .com or .net suffixes.

The world's estimated one million pornographic site operators will not be required to use the new .xxx suffix when a private company designated by the internet regulator begins accepting registrations later this year.

Obtaining .xxx addresses from British-based ICM Registry will cost $60 US a year, about 10 times higher than the current price to register a .com address.

Cost aside, established sites may be reluctant to change their website.....

Hmmm, wondering if this is an opportunity for some domain squatting.  At normal .com rates I'd try it, but not at $60.

As envisioned, ICM would charge $60 for each of up to 500,000 names it expects to register, $10 of which would go to a nonprofit organization that would, among other things, educate parents about safe surfing for children.

Would be nice if the current ones were forced to change.....especially the typo ones that send you to them!
