QUOTE
Internet porn sites will soon have the option of buying web addresses that end in "xxx" to let customers find them more easily while helping families block such sites from surfing children.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers agreed on Wednesday to allow addresses ending in .xxx instead of the more common .com or .net suffixes.

The world's estimated one million pornographic site operators will not be required to use the new .xxx suffix when a private company designated by the internet regulator begins accepting registrations later this year.

Obtaining .xxx addresses from British-based ICM Registry will cost $60 US a year, about 10 times higher than the current price to register a .com address.

Cost aside, established sites may be reluctant to change their website.....

Would be nice if the current ones were forced to change.....especially the typo ones that send you to them!

Hmmm, wondering if this is an opportunity for some domain squatting. At normal .com rates I'd try it, but not at $60.

I would expect ICANN in time to allow other companies to register the .XXX domains, just like what it did to Network Solution's monopoly. In no time, one probably can be posting dirty photos on a site that was registered for five bucks.

I was thinking the same thing. I jsut don't know if this will catch on. If they aren't forced to switch I don't see why'd they bother. Everyone is used to .com so it's easier and better to keep it at .com imo.

That is, better for them. I would prefer that they all had to end in .xxx.

I think once people get used to it, xxx will be easier to remember. It's a good idea, anyway.

As envisioned, ICM would charge $60 for each of up to 500,000 names it expects to register, $10 of which would go to a nonprofit organization that would, among other things, educate parents about safe surfing for children.

By then can someone setup bargainshare.xxx and have AMS on the premier issue?

That'd certainly make it easier for the filters to catch them... just ban all the .xxx sites. banana.gif
