We need a good washer and dryer for our home. We have been living in an apt so far and are moving to our own home next month.

We need energy efficient and good washer and dryer.

Please give us your suggestions on the top-loading and front-loading washing machines. Also what brands of HE detergents are available? I am not brand loyal when it comes to detergents but looks like u have to buy detergents marked with "HE" to use in front and some models of top-loading machines.

Also I need to know where can i get the washer and dryer for the cheapest price and any coupons available.

Thanks in Advance.

What is HE detergent?

Horizontal-axis washers (front-loaders) use 1/3 - 2/3 less water than vertical-axis machines (top-loaders), saving valuable water and energy resources. However, less water also means regular laundry detergents do not dissolve as easily and can leave soap residue on your clothes. Also, the tumbling action of an horizontal-axis machine is gentler on fabrics but adds more air to the water as your clothes are plunged into and lifted out of the water. This creates more suds than a conventional top-loading washer would. Excess suds can overflow and actually damage a front-loading machine. To prevent excessive sudsing when using regular detergents in an horizontal-axis washer, it is often necessary to use substantially less detergent. However, using less detergent can result in poor cleaning. As a result, it is best to use a specially formulated low sudsing laundry detergents with a front load washer. Some brands of HE detergent are listed below:

Fab,
Fresh Start,
Amway SA8
Tide HE
Wisk HE
Equator

A Front loading washer uses significantly less water and energy than a top loader. However, HE detergent is typically more expensive than regular laundry detergent. At retail, HE detergents can cost upwards of $13 for 100 ounces of liquid, so you may want to shop around to find a better deal if you are going to be buying HE detergent on a regular basis.

The last part is a bit dated. HE tide and wisk is significantly lower in price than that!

Thanks, AMS. smile.gif I will check this out.

I have a front loader and use regular liquid detergent in it. I have had no problems and only use about 1/4 of the detergent I would use in a top loader. The washer senses if it has suds and will wait until the suds dissipate before continuing.

I have the Whirlpool Duets and have noticed a drop in the water and electricity used. The dryer will dry a load in 50 minutes where our old dryer would take 2.5 hours.

make sure the dryer you get has a moisture sensor, so it knows when to stop drying and won't fry your clothes or waste energy drying dry clothes.

Thanks for the replies. I also found some useful information on whirlpool website.

Where should I look for good deals on these? Also are there any coupons available?

DealPass gift certificates.

Plus, Lowes, Home Depot and Sears all offer various coupons. Combined with the Dealpass GC's you can save 28% on just about any purchase. Use them on clearance items for an even better deal.

This is how I recently bought a refrigerator and a dishwasher (Lowe's 10% new mover coupon + $1250 worth of GC's).

Kitchenaid Ensemble Front Loading Washer and Dryer

HE Tide is $7.?? at Wal-Mart for 100 oz

Kitchen Aid is THE BEST.
Whirlpool is made by Kitchen Aid and is 2nd best.

I keep things for 10 years and more if possible.

My Kitchen Aid Washer and Dryer (extra large capacity) were bought in '98.
still going strong. that makes it 17 years! (can that be right??!!!)

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher that must have been a lemon. sad.gif
I have had a Maytag stove and am very lucky the house did not burn down!
Replaced that with a GE and all is very well...

I would stay away from Maytag. I saw the flaw and the bad quality firsthand.

Kenmore is also excellent from what I have seen in Consumer Reports.
I believe it is really Whirlpool.

good luck!!! smile.gif

P.S. ANYTHING that makes you buy special liquids or soaps ~ forget it!! WTF!!!!! bang.gif

Sears will PM BB. Find a good deal at BB and buy at Sears....that has been my best luck for large appliances.. Also, Sears will give free delivery AR and also let you pay 0 interest for 1 year.

Must be the luck of the draw. I would wash clothes with a rock before I used anything from Sears or Whirlpool. I'd only buy a Maytag washer/dryer in the future. They last forever with no repairs in my experience. My next set will be the Neptune. yes.gif

My White-Westinghouse washer (bought at BB) has been going strong for 18 years with never a service call...at it's prime it was doing 3 loads a day...now I have to scrounge to find enough white clothes to do a load every 2 weeks...aaah the "empty nest" syndrome.

The Kenmore electric dryer I have is about 15 years old...still works fine, but I try to use it as little a possible...I hang clothes outside if it's sunny and over 32 degrees...otherwise it's off to the basement.

Useful tip...if your washer looks like it's going to oversuds, add a little liquid fabric softener...it'll beat down the bubbles... biggrin.gif

Don't forget to look at local outlet stores for Scratch and Dent models. We saved hundreds on our refrigerator because there is a one inch scratch on the handle -- who cares?!?!?

Our Kenmore washer is a hand-me-down and is probably 25 years old and still going strong!!!!

My sister in law would suggest that a Maytag is a rock. She had many problems with two of them in a period of several years. It got to the point where her local dealer even offered to give her $300 credit toward a new one but she declined in favor of a Whirlpool/Kenmore at Sears. A bit of researching on Google reveals that the newer Maytags have considerable differences from the ones we grew up with. Those were great and had excellent reputations. User reviews show that the new models are not built with the same construction. This may change as you move up the price ranger but hers was around $600.

We've had good results from Whirlpools.

Today's newspaper included a flyer from Sears. In it was a coupon for $40 off appliances costing $399 or more. Regardless what brand you get, if Sears has it, you may want to have them price match and use the coupon. It is only good for three days, March 10-12. It also applies to regular prices, sale prices, clearance, etc. This is useful if you find a floor model or one with a minor cosmetic issue.

Ok, we are ready to buy our GE Washer and Dryer at Home Depot. We are planning to buy them tomorrow.

We have selected the following models:

Washer - GEŽ 3.5 Cu. Ft. Capacity King-size Washer with Stainless Steel Basket
Model WHRE5260EWW $379.00

Dryer -

GEŽ 7.0 Cu. Ft. Super Capacity Electric Dryer with Stainless Steel Drum
Model DRSR483EDWW $429.00 (or)

GEŽ Super 7.0 Cu. Ft. Capacity Electric Dryer with Dura Drum
Model DWSR405EBWW $399.00

Can anyone tell me whether " Moisture Sensor" and "Sensor Dry" mean the same?
Also what is the advantage of having Stainless Steel Drum(in Dryer) over Dura Drum?

Does anyone have or had any of these products? Are they any good? All my appliances in my new home(Gas Stove, Refrigerator, Dishwasher) are GE only. I searched for product reviews in google but could not find any. sad.gif

You need to find you a buddy at Best Buy. Some of the markups on that stuff is rediculous. Good luck in your purchase.
