I'm trying to get a USB mouse working with my sister's laptop.
I've tried three different mice. In every situation, the computer would detect the mouse, then prompt me to connect to Windows Update to try to find a driver prior to the usual "add new hardware" wizard.
The problem is that Windows never finds an appropriate driver for the mouse. On my laptop, I can connect any of the mice and use it w/o a driver, so I don't understand why my sister's laptop requires one.
Any help?

Hmmm you should be able to just plug and play with windows XP. I am guessing you dont have the driver disk that came with the mouse?
I am using a MS USB opitcal mouse on my laptop, yes it had drivers to be installed
I have a USB wireless adapter......it runs BETTER when connected to a powered hub

I tried two Targus mice, neither of which came with drivers, and both of which work fine on my laptop w/o installing a driver.
Have you successfully used other USB devices with her laptop? It could be a USB driver issue as opposed to a mouse driver issue.

I've tried an iPod...that didn't work (but it didn't work on my laptop either...)
Jump drives work fine.
I'll try hooking up a printer next.

Yeah, tried that last night with and without the Intellipoint drivers, to no avail.
Does a reg old ps/2 mouse work?
anything
here that might help?
You should just be able to plug in the mouse and have it work. Does the mouse work at all if you cancel the driver installation? Does the mouse appear in device manager when it's connected? What happens if you connect the mouse when the computer is off then turn it on? Do you have a USB to PS/2 adapter you can use?

No.
No (yellow "!" next to "USB device" under "other devices."
Nothing.
Nope.

I just tried a usb gamepad, to no avail. I'll look into updating my USB drivers.
Edit: Installing the gamepad went without a hitch on my laptop.
When it asks for the winDOZ update, jam in the XP CD and have it look there?
Have you tried a powered HUB?
Have you tried deleting the USB mouse drivers in Device manager and rebooting with the mouse plugged in and let winDOZ find it?

Roll back the drivers or do a system restore.

Toshiba A15-S127
I'll roll back if all else fails.
Everything show up as working properly in Device Manager?
ung: my mom's computer (on winme) also has this problem.
It does not recognize any USB device. Always try to find the driver or some other file is missing.
Solution was easy for me. Write down the file name it's trying to find, use the search function of windows and find it yourself. Write down the route to the file, submit it to the installation process.

Except the USB device in question (any optical mouse).
