Blocking the loading and downloading of unwanted "toolbars"

I go to a site given to me by another.......
FireFox asks...Do you want to save to disk this file?......I hit Cancel......I know its an unwanted toolbar....we all do NOT want. :-(

Is there a setting to always PREVENT FireFox from downloading theses toolbars or any download NOT asked for.....and other harmfull items?

I can add URLS to block with AdBlocker.......but this is NOT an ad

Its bad when you get a URL from someone.....go to it......and you are attacked

thanks

Anyway you can give me a link to an example of this type of site? I might be able to figure something out if given an example.

Hard to do...lots of legitimate download sites often do this ("Your download will start in a few seconds...". There's probably some way you can modify the Firefox config js files to do this though

How about blocking the site with your hosts file?

This was given to me: Just a bummer to be given a URL, and you go, and a DL or install starts while the page loads sad.gif

tools/options/web features -
allow web sites to install software -
set only the site u want to 'allow' or turn off the feature entirely.

This page has some pretty good info on the hosts file.
