Hi,

I am in New York for the next 2 days, and i was wondering if you guys could recommend decent places for shopping for men's apparel. I live in India so won't really get a chance again and would appreciate any advice smile.gif

Thanks in advance!

Hey...goosifer!!!! As far as I know he's the only NYC male around here...unless he's elsewhere eyehide.gif Maybe when the morning silliness wears off, someone can help you.

Isn't Barney's supposed to be a good store...I do not know...my DH is a jeans & flannel shirt kind of fellow...JC Penney is his "high end" store...bang.gif

Barney's, Macy's, & Bloomingdale's are among the bigger better dept stores.

A word of warning, I believe NYC sales tax is a bit steep, IIRC it's 8.625%
But I could be wrong, haven't been in NY in a while.

Madison Ave is a very interesting place if you want high-end and to pay for high- end clothing. What price range are you interested in?

I would recommend that you go to 6th Ave (Avenue of the Americas) between 20th and 23rd St. At 23rd, check out Burlington Coat Factory. There is a Mens Warehouse around 22nd, although I don't like that particular store. There is also a suit place on the east side of the street above a luggage store around 21st St. Around 20th St is a Filene's Basement, Bed Bath & Beyond, and a TJ Maxx all in one building.

A more interesting option, especially for Sunday, is to go to Orchard St on the Lower East Side where there are older smaller stores, a real mixed bag of shopping (pun intended tongue.gif)

Last suggestion, if you are interested in designer labels at all, is Century 21 dept store on Church St across from the World Trade Center site downtown.

If you have more specific questions, please let me know.

Hmm too bad about the sales tax. The no sales tax week is from Jan 31-Feb 6

I second all of this, excellent advice. Same places I was gonna suggest.

If you like high end designer stuff very deeply discounted there is a consignment store on 7th st btw 1st ave and 2nd called Tokyo 7. In the front of the store they have some deeply discounted clothes. I've always found some good things. There is another smaller branch of this store on 11th st near Veniero's Pastry.

I've never found anything that great on Orchard St or area. I use to live on Stanton so got to check them out regularly.

TJ Maxx is on the corner of 6th and 18th. I'm also a big fan of Century 21. If you're looking for fashion jewelry or "stuff" look in all of the windows along Broadway between 20-30th streets. Don't be put off by the "wholesale only" signs... they're pretty much just kidding. Don't buy the movies off the street unless you like to see heads at the bottom of the screen. And don't forget Canal Street. Best knock-off everything you can get, pocketbooks, wallets, hats, sunglasses, watches... NY is a fun city to shop because you can get EVERYthing.

I second the "Century 21" suggestion. Another option is to jump on a PATH train into NJ (costs perhaps $2 each way). Take the PATH to the Newport Center Station (that should be the Newport Center Mall in Jersey City).

Clothing is tax-free in NJ, and the Newport Center Mall is in a "redevelopment" area of NJ (which means 3% sales tax instead of 6%). Why that mall is still considered redevelopment is beyond me, as it's one of the most upscale places in that part of NJ. blink.gif

There's also a Century 21 in Morristown, NJ; however, you'll need to take a NJ Transit train (from Penn Station, NYC or Penn Station, Newark NJ) to get there. The NJ Transit train station in Morristown isn't exactly in walking distance to Century 21 though.

Enjoy NYC while you're there. It's a fun city (and, uh, expensive!) biggrin.gif

Upscale? blink.gif Redeveloping certainly, but upscale? The 3% sales tax is a perk though. yes.gif If you are unfamiliar with where this is relative to Manhattan, it is about a block from the Holland tunnel in Jersey City.

BTW, the Path makes me claustrophobic. blushing.gif

i third century 21. and if you are young.. h&m rocks. i think they carry men's stuff. i so wish they had one here...

even tho macy's, bloomies and dept stores are quite expensive, there is always a sale rack in them. and if u have the time and patience, the sale racks do pay off.
