Black Friday Sales Online

What methods do you use for Black Friday online purchases?
What stores have Black Friday sales available online?
Is there a certain time you have to order online?
Is online better or worse than B&M?

just thought i'd start an online BF discussion ....

I found this interesting in how you may want to plan your strategy for online/b&m shopping and how to get the best pricing. I usually combine both, but the online shopping I generally limit to stores that aren't available locally to me. I don't have a long list of gifts to buy, however. I take advantage for retailers more aggressive pricing strategies for myself and household.

Forrester Research Releases U.S. Holiday Season Online Retail Forecast

Forrester Research - October 19, 2004

Forrester Research predicts online holiday retail sales will increase by 20 percent over 2003, to $13.2 billion, representing a decrease in year-over-year growth. The analysts attribute the decrease in year-over-year holiday online retail growth to the maturing of online sales and to anticipated retailer strategies for in-store and online promotions.

In comparison, last year's growth over 2002 was 31 percent.
The Forrester report, "Online Holiday Sales 2004: Proceed With Caution," points to the mainstreaming of online shopping and retailers' efforts to boost in-store sales during the 2004 holiday season as the main reasons for the decrease in year-over-year growth.

"As online shopping becomes more mainstream, online growth will begin to mimic lukewarm offline sales. And, because stores are the channel most at risk of missing sales forecasts this year, retailers will scale back online promotions, such as free shipping, and will promote large in-store discounts as a way to drive customers to stores," says Forrester Research Senior Analyst, Carrie A. Johnson. "As a result, the benefits of in-store shopping may outweigh the convenience of shopping online this year."

Forrester defines the holiday season as the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The research mentioned in this release, "Online Holiday Sales 2004: Proceed With Caution," is available to Forrester WholeView 2™ clients.

Does anybody know which stores have the same Black Friday sales available online? I definitely want to do Toys R' Us, but don't want to do the line, LOL. Also want to do Sears and Radio Shack but babysitter has backed out so I have to make other arrangements. If I can do them online it would be great. Thanks, Jen

Lowes is a good store to order online with for in store pick up. But be advised that once they get busy your order may get overlooked. The good news is that I have had good luck with the manager giving me something better than what I ordered when this happens and my items are not available when I get to the store. If you don't want to gamble on your original items being there when you arrive be sure to call first thing in the AM when the store opens so that your order items will be pulled form stock and they will be waiting for you at the CS counter.

Online is the way to go. No getting trampled so some behemoth can get a no name dvd player for $20.

Is it circuit city that now has the promo that you can order online for instore pick-up? If they don't have it by 24 minutes after you place the order they have to give you a $24 giftcard. This should be interesting if they let you do that on BF. Seems like there would be no way they would have the whole order ready for you in 24 minutes what with crowds and all.

Gonna take a lot more than 24 minutes to get to the front of the line anyway..

Well i meant On the line infront of B&M store.

I was just wondering if the Early Bird Specials were available online? I dont want to wait and see that the early bird specials arent available online and have to drive to staples or bestbuy and by that time everything will be gone.

If its available online it would be more convenient for me as i dont like to drive on this hectic day anyway.

Walmart allows you to buy online. I remember last year when they had the gameboys so cheap their online department made a mistake and had the purple-ish one on sale (at Black friday price) for almost a week. LOL My friend figured it out and told me and everyone she knew. It would periodically show out of stock but if you checked several times a day then it woudl show in stock. Anyway, I purchased two of them and I think she purchased two also.

The circuit city ad shows available online on turkey day on the 1st page; however, does that mean the entire 1st page, including the $199 (+250 if no AOL) laptop will be available?

Regardless, will try ordering online starting thanksgiving and onwards for some of their items and maybe instore pickup too to see if they'll hold them at BF prices. I don't care on the 24min guarantee. Just hold the item!

Last year, I bought 24 dvd seasons 1-3 for $20 each at best buy online on black friday (in the afternoon?). I believe best buy have similar or maybe same sale on their website and store on black friday. I'm not sure, 'coz, I didn't go to the store, I only shop online. I remember that I got my stuffs within a week. Better than go to the store and fight for items and wait in line. wink.gif

Are these BF deals that are in stores also on line? Is it harder on line? How many of you have shopped on line and how is it?

Some stores have their online sale, which might be slightly different from their B&M deals. And those online stores' server get pounded really hard so it is also pretty possible that you won't be able to get what you want to buy online.

But again, rule #1 for black friday sale: if you check out B$ frequently, BF might not have the best deals of the year.

If you read the fine print under the discription it says in store only. They don't hold items for you, you buy them and take your receipt, CC, and ID to pick it up. It's my favorite way to shop.

I need to know if people have done online for Lowes and Home Depot in the past years and if they think stuff will be available from these two stores online this year....

I have the two products i need up on there respected sites, I have my staples.com shopping cart full with what I need, and I plan to attempt it with sears and radio shack as well...

What does everything think? If you have done it in the past, please include wheather or not it was a doorbuster item, a 2 or 3 day item only, your state or store location, and the item if you want.

thanks for all of your help. I have sears, home depot and lowes all in my town, but they are all far away from each other and in 3 seperate directions, so I really need to decide where I can get the shop vac's on superspecial.. I would prefer online w/instore pickup if possible tongue.gif

I didn't realize stores did the online sales. Today I did it for the first time. The Apple store offered a discount on the new Ipod Nano today and they did it online also.

CC offers a "Price Protection" guarantee, "If you select our In-Store Pickup option, you will automatically get the lowest price we're currently offering on the item(s) you purchased. If the in-store price on the day of pickup is lower than the price you saw on our website the day of your purchase, then you get the store price. We'll automatically refund the difference based on your original payment method."

Says nothing about exclusions on BF - would this be a viable strategy?

Last year I bought my HDTV at Circuit City the day before Thanksgiving. It still has not dropped as low as the price that day again (web-only special picked up in-store). Point being make sure you are getting the best deal on BF by shopping your target items hard for a week or two prior to the day.

Like I mentioned in my other post, Last year, I called J&R electronics (NYC) and asked them about their price match policy on the night before thanksgiving. They responded that if I could email them the proof and the product was identical, then they would match.

I ended up getting the Westinghouse, LCD HD TV that best buy had in thier black friday add, and I got it for the same price, free shipping and not waiting out in the cold.

I owe my thanks to B$ and its members, because someone posted the BB BF Ad as a pdf and this allowed me to copy and paste it and then send it via email to customer care dept at J&R. After all that, I watched on the news, customers fighting at the local mall outside bestbuy and was told that only about 40 or 50 people out of a line of about 2000 got the stuff they wanted. I hate waiting in lines and I hate the cold, so between B$ and online shopping, I couldn't be happier

CC did respond to me that their Automatic Price Protection would NOT apply to BF specials. However I was able to order what I wanted online on Thanksgiving day, and had a smooth no-wait pickup after 12p on BF!

I felt bad for the people who stood in line overnight. I kinda "cut in" to the pool of TVs available to them, and did like NO work.
