I got a problem with this file - big 757MB movie file. It is not going to work with any player. I am trying to delete it. I did few restarts and tried to fix drive with Norton tools. When I try to delete it still say that some program uses this file and it can't be deleted. Once I click this file my CPU is 100% busy.

I am using WinXP Pro. I checked for ad ware. And I tried to delete this file in safe mode.

Any idea what I can do to get rid of this file?

Thank you very much
Miranda
I've had this problem before with some files. I'm not really sure exactly how I end up deleting them, but some of the things I try are:

- open up another .avi file that works, then try deleting the corrupt file
- hide the "details" (on the left side of Windows Explorer) by clicking on the up arrow, then delete the file

these might not work, but I try them anyway:

- try to rename the file, then delete it (sometimes if it won't let you delete them, it won't let you rename them either)
- try to move the file into a folder all by itself, then delete it

I would navigate into the directory with the command prompt and delete from there. You may be running into the problem where explorer is trying to show the preview of the file and ends up killing your machine. e.g. if the file is D:\movies\mymovie.avi

Start - run - cmd
d:
cd movies
del mymovie.avi

Note this won't get into your recycle bin, so make sure you delete the right file!

Thank you very much for help.

Got this from FW:

Download the program Killbox from here. Open it, find the file using the little folder icon, choose the Standard file kill button. Choose the red x to delete it. If that doesn't do it then choose to delete it on reboot.

This is what I used. It kill file in few minutes and I was trying to get rid of this file all day today.

This is what I do when I run into this problem.

1) Hit ctrl-alt-del
2) Kill the explorer.exe process.
3) Under the applications tab, click "new task..." and type "command"
4) Navigate to the correct directory and delete the file
5) Click "new task" again, and type "explorer"
