Because you can?

It's fast, you can have 10 meg attachments, virtually no storage limit (1 gig).

that's strange. i almost never have trouble with it and it's the fastest email i've ever used.

i personally like it for the search feature.

just don't leave anything personal/confidential in gmail. no email programs are truly secure, but gmail is among the worst when it comes to privacy issues.

Security is an issue, so I only use it for innocuous communication. The supposedly content linked google ads are hilarious though wink.gif

I got a gmail account, but I've never used it. Didn't get invites to give out either sad.gif

It wasn't that big of a deal to me because I have several personal domains, so my wife's and my emails are at those. I can set up as many junk addresses as I want. And using the anti-spam built into netscape 7, it actually stays pretty clean. My junk address gets about 250 spam a day, which netscape cleans up down to 5-10 left for me to check. Plus I have webmail set up on it, so I can check it from anywhere.

So I don't know why I bothered getting the gmail account. Too bad I used my name (firstlast) as my username there, otherwise I'd give it to someone...

The only thing I'd use it for would be because I currently have my email at home setup to download from the server, not leave it on. So if I need to have access to an email from elsewhere (work, etc), I could forward it to gmail. But I already have a yahoo account for that smile.gif

It pays to be an early member of any mail program...so later on when they change their terms......many times you are "grandfathered" in biggrin.gif

I don't think that's an accurate representation of the service. I presume you're talking about their policy for ads (if you have knowledge of some other privacy issue, then disregard this comment). What they do is scan your email for keywords and put ads on the right side of the browser based on those keywords. It works the same way as the Google ads at the bottom of this page work. If I post the word "memory" in this post, then the ads at the bottom might be for www.crucial.com or some other memory reseller.

IMO, this is one reason Google encourages you to not delete you email, and just keep it. The more email they have the more data they can mine on you, and presumably the better targeted their ads will be.

But, in any case, it is a computer that searches your email for keywords and determines the ads to put there. Although this is new and different, and is certainly something to be aware of, I don't really think it's something that should prevent you from using Google vs. Hotmail vs. Yahoo for your free webmail. And I don't think it makes them "among the worst when it comes to privacy issues".

Here's an article in wired magazine about the topic - link

no, i'm talking about the ease of hacking into your email. while no email is truly secure, gmail has been proven to be a lot more vulnerable than most.

it doesn't stop me from using it as my primary account, but i would certainly not use it for anything of a highly confidential nature.

Gmail doesn't work with IE and ZoneAlarm on my computers sad.gif

Adding it to a trusted site doesn't work, either....but there are two reasons why I wouldn't use Gmail -- no ZA if using with IE *plus* it doesn't work with Opera! good thing I use FireFox

I use it with IE and ZA...no problems at all.

Great....must be just me. 3 different computers that run ZA and IE won't get it to work properly on any one of them. I also know it's ZA because I can use IE with gmail after ZA is shut down...

Well, I, personally love that it refreshes every 2 minutes. I can be on any computer and just leave a window open and it refreshes automatically every 2 minutes so I can glance once in a while and see if I got anything new.

Things I love:
- The interface
- The fact that it doesn't load every link, but simply changes the content of the page
- The way it keeps a conversation in one thread, so I can clearly see what I wrote, what I got back, etc, without having to look in "Sent items" and try to figure out what I said and when.

Things I don't like:
- Can't sort by Name, Address, Date, Size. Can't sort at all.
- Can't forward a whole conversation to someone. That is, you can forward a single message, but can't forward a whole conversation thread. I wrote them about this, so maybe if other people did to, they'll add that feature.
- Can't e-mail multiple recipients by just selecting their names in the Contacts list.

I made it my primary e-mail.

See http://jaybe.org/info.htm for POP goes the Gmail!, a little program that fetches mail from Gmail (maybe sends too), by acting as a local POP3/SMTP server [localhost] for your regular e-mail program.

I like the idea of the online storage capability... haven't used it yet, but was thinking about using it to backup docs...

I think a lot of gmail's "coolness" is only realized if you really try and use it...if you use it like any other webmail service, then it's not so special. I'm too used to POP mail, and if I used a gmail POP program, it kind of defeats the purpose of gmail's clever interface tongue.gif
