I'm a tech, and I can vouchsafe the floppy's continued existence...diagnostics, firmware updates, you name it.
I'd LOVE to go to a USB key format, and have everything on one disk, but you know....

Most modern systems can boot from the CDROM, so the bootable cd has replaced the floppy for me. I still have a floppy drive in one of my systems though, just because. I do use floppy disks in some electronic music keyboards and such. But even those are starting to phase them out.
