Yesterday we bought a 2003 Acura MDX, we also bought the extended warranty for an extra 60,000 miles. Was this a bad thing to do? I got until Tuesday to change my mind and cancel it without any surcharges... The vehicle has 21,500 miles on it already. Are there many things that can go wrong with this vehicle?

PLMK, TIA!

Kind of depends on how much you paid for the warranty.

Also, how much is left on the original warranty. Is that just 36000 miles total for the original warranty?

So, if it's 36000 miles....you'll basically have it for a year before that warranty would have expired. Since i'm going to say that most people on average use their cars 15000 miles per year. (36000 - 21000)

so beyond that.....this extended warranty would be for 1.5 to 2 years extra of warranty. Since this is a 60000 miles and the original warranty already went for 36000. Which means that those 24000 miles would probably be used in 1.5 to 2 years (12-15000 a year)

So you'd have to weigh how much you paid for the extra warranty against how long it would last.

If you have any idea of the maintenance that was performed by the original owner, that would be good to know.

I'm not sure how easy this is to do....but.... you might see if you can get a print out of what warranty work was done in the original 21000 miles to see if there were a lot of problems with the car in the past.

You can also go to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ and look up the Technical Service Bulletins and consumer complaints for your car. That way you can see if you've got some problems right now that might not have been fixed.

hope that helps

Well, we now see that there are other places other than the dealer where one can get an extended warranty for a used vehicle, and in doing some research we find that the one we got is a bit expensive.... Does anyone have any experience with purchasing an extended warranty after the car's purchase is done? Any suggestions?

I can't post any expertise other than past purchases. I bought one from Warranty Gold on a new car that was cheaper than the dealer. Never used it, and was given 80% of my purchase price back. I was quite happy and when we bought the next car, I got another one from them. Never used it as I kept waiting for a more extensive list of things to go wrong and anticipated getting the 80% back. When I called to get my refund on the 2nd one, they told me I didn't have a 'participation card' on file and couldn't get my money back. I told the manager that I didn't have a card the first time and wasn't told about a card. He basically told me tough luck. I then found out they were going under due to the bank that was backing them failing. We bought a new Honda at the end of last month and I bought the warranty directly from them. We put double the average miles on our cars and the 100k warranty was worth it to me. They were about $100 more than the aftermarket company and I feel pretty strongly that Honda isn't going under anytime soon.

I would say check with your local bank or credit union. When I bought my truck, I bought the dealer extended warranty and found out you can buy the same thing for much less elsewhere. I went to the credit union and told them what I had and was able to double my coverage period and negotiate the price as well. I ended up having to use the warranty several times and had very good experiences with it. I would say make sure that you look to see what's included and what's excluded. Also, make sure that you look at where you can take your car to be fixed. With mine, I can take it to any certified mechanic that guarantees their work for 6 months. Some others require that you go to specific places. I like having the flexibility to take my truck to my favorite dealer for repairs.
