well so i decided to build my own computer case. the plan is to get a cubic block of wood and take out a cube shape so that i have a hollow cube with the top side cut off if that makes sense. like cube shaped cup. then i'll make the rest of the necessary cuts with a dremel rotary tool which i already decided on pretty much.

what i need is something that will "scoop" out the center.
i also need a decent sander to smooth everything out.
everything else i think the dremel thing can handle.
i need something with matching silver colorish hinges, a lock or knob of some type, and perhaps some kind of legs/feet to raise it up a half inch or so.
also does anyone have a suggestion for a nice dark rich color of wood, i'm leaning towards cherry at the moment

oh yah one thing i forgot to add on, i need to cut off maybe an inch or inch and a half off the top before i scoop out the center so that i can make a lid that matches the bottom.

i'm in the bay area if anyone knows where i can get this stuff locally

thanks in advance for all the help!

if you make it out of wood, you are going to have to worry about grounding everything...

and depending on how hollow you make it you will have to worry about the wood splitting, and deforming as it dries

have you considered venneer?

I have a hard enough time dealing with warping & cracking of large boards.

You're going to have a heck of a time getting a block of solid wood the size of a desktop computer, and then not having it split on you.

That said, you could use a drill press with a Forstner bit to hollow it out. You could then use a sanding drum on the drill press to sand the inside walls. It's still going to be very hard to get perfectly smooth inside surfaces.

Why not just use boards of wood to make your box? If you want it to look nice, you could always use a nice-looking joint between the boards (like dovetail joints).
