Bestcrypto is an encrypting program. It's free and there is no need to install the software on the receiving end.

MBRTool is a free DOS program designed to backup, restore and manipulate your HD's Master Bot Record.

MBRtool is not an automatic recovery program but will allow users to prevent dataloss (due to MBR corruption) by backing up the MBR, and offers power users all the power they'll ever need to 'mess' with their MBR.
WingsOverVA
Since it is not represented here Pandasoftware's ActiveScan online virus, trojan and other Malware scanner should be added to the list. It does find hits that Adaware, Spybot and TrendMicro's online scanner does not. Plus it will print a report that aids in manually removing the offending entries, especially in the registry.

You could try this one:

I'm not sure if you could select quality though.

It's been a while since i suggested anything to add to the list. I usually like to try things out before recommending and I've been using the Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) and CCleaner programs and am impressed with both. Windows AntiSpyware is for Windows 2000 / XP, so if you have an older version of Windows don't bother with the download.

Thanks so much for the "useful software " thread.- It’s truly one of the most useful threads I’ve come across- I esp needed the “stop the messenger”!!

Just a quick question- can you use the mcafee stinger if you use Symantec antivirus system?

And do you think you could add roboform and pdfill to the list? Although they are not “critical” and are not freeware- they are very reasonably priced and very nifty programs - pdfill is just $10 -I have used them both for the past 3-4 yrs and find them very useful. (I use the older free version of roboform so can save 30 passwords) or does anyone have suggestions for better, but similar programs?

Yes. Stinger does not stay resident (it does not offer real time protection) and only looks for a certain number of viruses. I would disable other anit-virus software when running it though. Better yet, run it in safe mode.

Yeah I usually run it in safe mode, I'm a big fan of it actually, it is a good tool. I believe I have run it in regular mode while Symantec was running and haven't had any problems. So if you have to you can probably use it that way without problems. But you never know.

An amazingly helpful tool that isn't on the list is Process Explorer. It has helped me more times than I can count. It's one of the sysinternals.com tools.

McAfee SiteAdvisor

This handy extension for Internet Explorer makes a great addition to your Web security arsenal. SiteAdvisor draws from an enormous database of Web sites that have been checked out for spyware threats, malicious cookies, and questionable marketing ploys. Wow you guys have come up with a pretty impressive list. I think it is pretty sad that we need this many applications just to keep our computers working well. sad.gif

Yeah I know what you mean. It's similar to a car though, you have to take care of it.

The main issue is McAfee/Symantec or memory hungry and the recent version of McAfee products are aweful it seems. Check McAfee Help

I'll update it either tonight or tomorrow, thanks for the reminder.

As for keylogger removal:
SSA Keylogger Clean
This will get rid of the SSA Keylogger, but not any other. Usually, if it is detectable, your Anti-Virus should pick it up. What I mean is, the most common keyloggers are usually detected by your Anti-Virus. The time you run into trouble is when it's a brand new or custom written Keylogger, then it is more difficult to detect.
n99nyrwg
That took longer than I thought it would. It is now updated.

I really like this app:

SpaceMonger - it helps you find out what files and directories are taking up the space on your hard drive.

That's a link to the older, freeware version. There's also a newer, commercial version available that has a lot more features.

I beg to disagree: I was infected by 2 (not newly written) keyloggers and I was using Avast at home and something else at work. Both my PCs were infected. no.gif

No, that falls in line with what I stated. The popular keyloggers are usually detected by all popular AntiVirus programs. The ones you were infected by may have either been custom written or not mainstream products.

I just had to add http://www.autohotkey.com/ to the list. I have used AutoHotkey for about 2 years now. This software is phenomenal for those who do repetitious typing of the same thing over and over, open a particular program often, or open a particular folder/drive often. I made some Hotkeys for work and increased my piece-rate pay about $3/hr more on the average. I use it to make simple GUI's to make my life simpler. The possibilities are endless with this program - I recently made enough GUI's at work to transform the whole payroll system to 100% complete paperless. It's a must have for Bargainshare users!

AutoHotkey unleashes the full potential of your keyboard, joystick, and mouse. For example, in addition to the typical Control, Alt, and Shift modifiers, you can use the Windows key and the Capslock key as modifiers. In fact, you can make any key or mouse button act as a modifier.

P.S. During several class periods in college, I even made a script to play Bejeweled for me! What a geek I am!
