Full Version: Problems Playing Video Files?

I posted over in FW a while back about how I was having problems playing certain video files. Either I would get no sound, or no video, or distortion. I downloaded the NIMO codec pack which fixed most of my problems, but I still wasn't able to play certain movies, such as LOTR - TTT. I had asked Zoid about the specific file and he recommended that I download a file called XVID by Vite, which I did. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS FILE. It has a trojan horse in it. Anyway, after deleting the trojan horse, the video would play fine, but recently every time I would play certain movies the distortion would be back, or I would get that green film over everything. So, after looking on the web for quite a while, I found a fix for everything and now haven't had any problems at all. I thought I would share this here if anyone needs it.

Taken from MovieCodec Forum :

1. Uninstall the Nimo Codec Pack and any other codecs you have tried installing – get rid of them ALL!
2. Shut down your machine.
3. Restart the thing – duh.
4. Download the FFDSHOW 01-03-2003 alpha from http://www.dawnload.net/video_software/sub...ols/ffdshow.cfm or http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so...ers/ffdshow.cfm or just do a search for “FFDSHOW Filter” and look for the one with the date 01-03-2003.
5. Now install the Nimo Codec Pack first, BUT make sure you uncheck the “Ffdshow DirectShow 2002-04-19” under “DirectShow Filters” and keep hitting “Next” until the install completes.
6. Now install the “FFDSHOW 01-03-2003” you have downloaded (it’s 9 months newer than the other one and you will see that makes all the difference). Just accept all the default settings and keep clicking “Next”.

!Voila! You are done! No more crashing, just smooth sailing when watching your movies up for academy consideration.

This latest Ffdshow plays Xvid and runs right on through the bad frames.

Have a quick fix for those MPEG movies that play all funny? I'll open an mpeg and it will play the first few seconds and completely ignore the rest of the file. If I manually drag the little position slider I can see that there is more to the file. I've had this problem on my mac as well as my PC. The only fix that I could ever think of was to re-encode the MPEG file. There has got to be an easier way, no?

That used to happen to me on certain files. Since I did this however, I have not had any problems.

It would really suck having to click on the bar every 10 seconds to watch something lol

I will try this later. Thanks for the tip! I've got some DivX that don't play right. I hope all works well for me. smile.gif thanks!

Only if you downloaded a file called "XVID by Vite" from Kazaa.

You would know if you had the trojan because it takes over your computer and becomes active a couple days after download.

XVID is just a video compression format - it's the file above that you have to watch out for.

Just as another tip for everyone, if you're having problems playing a file you can get this tool called GSpot which will identify what codecs you need in order to play a file. This way you can just install codecs individually as you need them if you want. Thanks again for the post AM*, I was still using an older version of the FFDSHOW filter and I wasn't even aware that there was a newer version released this year.

Adult movie star
From what I understand, a lot of the clips of other adult movies stars, and perhaps some of yours too, use the DivX codex available from http://www.divx.com/

I can't see some of the movies I've downloaded recently. So if I uninstall the one from divx.com, and install the one at http://nimo.titanesk.com/modules/mydownloads/ is that what I may need?
BornAgainStar
Don't worry about downloading DIVX codecs separately. Just do what I posted above and all your video files will play just fine.

Bump

This is the only solution that has fixed all the video files I play on my PC.

Yeah it has worked great for me too!

Only one small problem with some video files. I will be able to view a whole movie from beginning to end, but the timer will stop counting about midway through my file. So say the movie file is really an hour long. I'd only get the counter up til about 20minutes. Surely this is better than seeing only the first 20 minutes of the second half of a downloaded movie but it's still weird.

Any known fixes for this problem? (if not, no biggie.)
