every time i try to use Word, after about 10 minutes i get a C++ error message and have to close Word.

What OS and version of Word are you running?
Also, did your version of Word come as part of MS Works? If it did, uninstall the Works add-in for Word in Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

i am using windows xp

i have tried doing an uninstall and re-installing it and it still did not work.

Yupp, I've seen this before.

Don't uninstall and reinstall the whole thing.
Just uninstall the Works add-in for Word.
There seems to be some incompatability issues with the add-in.

If it's every 10 minutes you might be having trouble with the auto-save option. I once got a poor install of Word on my computer and it would freeze up everytime it began auto-save. Try disabling it to see if that's what's causing your problem.
