Title says it all.

Is this something I can find listed on my computer somewhere?
Frank
I know Sandra has it, but it's only in the pay version unfortunately sad.gif.

I'll take a look around at Google and let you know if I find something.

What's the make and model of the board -or- what's the make and model of the computer?
binkie94
I have a Dell 4100 & 4550
Landau
From what I could find both the 4100 and the 4550 are ATA 100. The speed difference between ATA 100 and ATA 133 is not even noticeable. Also you can run ATA 133 drives on a ATA 100 bus with no problems.

Correct me if I'm wrong Alan. tongue.gif
Alan
Yes, you can run ATA133 drives on an ATA100 IDE port. It will run at ATA100. However, there really isn't a noticable difference between the two because in real life the transfer rate will be around 40MB/s.

Thanks guys! hypocrite.gif

I was hoping I wasn't gonna have to buy the controller if I decided to use the 160GB HD.

Didn't really think about why you would want to know if your mobo has ATA133. The reason seems kind of obvious given all the hard drive deals that have been going on angel_not.gif. So, you didn't really need to know if your mobo had ATA133 but if the hard drive would work on your current computer. That's what I should have read chick.gif .

Although binkie94 will be able to use a 160GB hard drive in his machine, the machine won't recognize the full capacity, will it? Isn't that another reason (besides the minimal speed gain) for him to get a ATA/133 controller?

Well, not really, if she (I'm pretty sure binkie's a she, correct me if I'm wrong angel_not.gif) has Windows XP SP1.

M$ article about dealing with Hard Disk Capacity > 137 GB

ED: Arggh, somewhat bad link

F
Alan
Yes, XP SP1 has support for drives > 137GB.

ah, now I understand tongue.gif But it's still helpful to know (to me at least) how one can tell.

Thanks all smile.gif
