Speaking of Spybot, every time I try to update the new updates, my computer freezes up. This only happens with Spybot... any idea why? I haven't been able to update in probably almost two months now

happens to me also. It can find the updates but it freezes most of the time when it tries to d/l it.


I seem to have better luck d/ling a wierd times of the day.

This was discussed in an earlier thread, sometimes it just takes it a while to get the download. If you wait long enough it will complete the update, eventually.

Make sure it's pointing to Rootboxen.net, the USA server.

Just tried it... updated ok.

New Spybot files available, they are dated 3-4-04 but just showed up today.

The Spybot system is screwed up again right now (what else is new?) and the updates are not downloading. Will need to try again later.

if you leave the download server on the default option (somewhere in europe), the program is going to hang for a long time. I find that by changing to a US server I get the files in seconds and NEVER have the updater hang.


What I haven't been able to find out is how to make the selection of the US server permanent. As it stands, I need to manually select it each time I update.

It wasn't hanging before for me, it was trying to download and failing. Instead of checkmarks it would show exclamation points meaning the download failed. I waited an hour or so and tried again and it downloaded fine.

When you first click to the update page, it automatcially goes to the European site, but hangs for only a second or two. But BEFORE clicking the option to d/l the updates, I switch it to the US site, which has always worked fine.

Thanks for the info DamnItJim. Worked fine.
But, in order to select your download site, you need to open in advanced mode. Option not available if open in easy mode.

Warning if you get a message box:
"SPYBOT S&D is now applying the necessary fix to your network drivers." If you click OK, it will make changes that will probably blow your internet connection. Best to terminate program thru task manager. Otherwise, may need to do a system restore. See here, for more info & possible cure.

The problem you mention was from an update back in Dec (16) 2003 that seems to only have affected certain software firewalls.

Except it happened to me after deleting McAfee and installing Panda. I think it may also have something to do with the firewall, which I didn't have active before.

Version 1.3 seems to have gotten the bugs worked out, at least for WinXP. There are still some issues for Win95. I had been unable to get any updates for the version 1.2 that I had installed and last night I went ahead and updated to 1.3. According to the Spybot forum you should reboot before running version 1.3 for the first time, even though the install will run the new spybot wizard as part of the install. After installing 1.3 I was still unable to get any updates even though the forum said that there should be 2 available right after install. It recommended uninstalling the new version and then reinstalling and exiting the new wizard and rebooting, then try to get the updates again. I did that twice, but still could not download the updates. This morning after booting the computer I started spybot and checked for updates, it found 2 and updated normally. Maybe it needs a hard, cold boot after installing, last night I was just doing a restart.

So anyway, new version 1.3 (final) is available here

Did not know about v1.3---was wondering why I couldn't get updates for a while. (why couldn't 1.3 just be updated from the program, or at least some kind of new version alert and link?)

Edit: Installing and I see features for SDHelper and TeaTimer....do these work well? (only the SDHelper is checked by default)

There is no documentation in Spybot for the 2 new additions Teatimer and SDHelper, both activated throught the Tools/Resident spybot menu. One of the members on the spybot forum put up THIS site to answer some questions.

the 10/26 update has caused problems for many ppl.

Many including myself got this message during a scan

Error during check!
Cabrotor (Datei C:\WINDQWS\win.ini kann nicht geöffnet werden. The process cannot access the file because it is… etc.

To fix this problem you will have to d/l the TX update.

AdAware has not updated lately.

Been using free test of SpySubtract seems to do alot.
deciding if I should pay.

Edit:

Did the update of Spybot & ran it (After Adaware & SpySubtract)
Found 11 copies (of 3 different items).

My findings are that each spyware/adware remover scans in different ways. Each will find items that it's counterpart doesn't.

TrendMicro.com is now offering a free adware scan along with it's free virus scan. I haven't been able to run it yet though. Keep getting a server error.

Has anyone else had issues with the new version? On two machines that I installed it on the resident alerts have had the "Remember this decision" box overlapping the "Allow" and "Deny" boxes.
