Ok This has been a pain every time I install new hardware (especially related to video).

OP System: Win XP Pro 2002 Svc Pac 1.

Installing TV Tuner/ Capture Card ( WDM Drivers).

I can only install if logged on as Administrator ( Even though My Logon is a member of Administrators).

The problem is when I log on as myself the driver is gone . If I try & re-install as myself it says "Data is Invalid."

Back to Administrator Logon & the driver is fine?

How can I assure total authority for My Logon & then turn it back off to prevent unwanted changes in normal operation.

Thanks
Alan
I had a similar problem not too long ago. Turned out to be a problem with permissions in the windows registry. I can't remember where I found this, but I saved it in a text file in case I needed it again.

NOTE: I'm not in the habit of telling people to edit the registry. Always proceed with caution and follow instructions. Even make a backup in case something really screws up.

QUOTE
This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported). To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "regedt32" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI

and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like  "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04".

Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install.

Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select "Permissions" and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device.

wub.gif Thanks Alan.

I had fooled around ( OOPS) in the registry & had some struggles changing the permissions.

The exact location listed in the clip you posted was not actually there. ( On My Install )

It did however lead me to setting security options for the Current User Globaly

Also I made a separate discovery while installing update drivers from the manuf. Website

1. Go to the downlowded folder.
2. Locate program folder with the updates (do not run program).
3. Right Click on Folder, Go to Properties, then Security/ permissions.
4. Select options for this device per user.

Worked great!.

Windows seems to have no end to frustrating control options, However learning is rewarding.

blow.gif Update:
Previous install was on My PC w/ Xp Pro.
NOW I had to contend with installing my hand me down Win TV Go on My Wifes PC w/ Xp Home.

Now I had NO way to access administrator in Normal Mode as I WAS able to do in Pro (eventually).

I took a shot with the support group at D3LL. ( figureing that D3ll Version of XpHome may be hobbled as to administrator logon) 3.5 Hrs wasted. Except for the fact the one of the CSR's did abmit that this was a freequent request from users that was UNRESOLVED. I got as far as a senior software support rep (Finally switched back to USA from Phillipines) Who decided I was attempting to bypass a corp. security level & sonlded like she needed another joint so she quotes some pre fab excuse & I gave up.
That was Sunday Nite.

Monday I called Hauppauge ( Manuf). Got a sharp rep. After we agreed that I had done all the NORMAL install routines, He asked for 30 Min. to get some help.

Called me back in 40 & emaild a stronger Hardware clear exe file & that did it. The "Access Denied" was being called from a protocall left behind from another Hauppaug install.

Card works GREAT with Dscaler ( Generic Freeware TV card program) However the Happauge program will not connect. No problem as I prefer the Dscaler program.

BTW this is the XPHome version that came with My 8250 running on my old Athlon 800 Classic platform w/ a FIC Mobo.

The 8250 has XP Pro Full Install from the XP Partner deal from FW almost 2 years ago.

Hope this all makes some sense as it's posted so It may help someone someday!!

Happy Hollidays to ALL!

George
