He has an e-machine.... 1.67 80gig hard drive I think and 512 memory.

he is a big gamer and would like more memeory. so he wants to give me his 256 and wants us to buy him another 512..........

any help would be great

Thanks
Alan
What's the model of the emachine?
In all likelihood it takes PC2100 or PC2700 RAM, but post the model number and we can tell you for sure.

From emachine:
256 MB DDR (PC2100)
Memory: MEM, DDR-RAM 256MB (MAX. 2GB)
http://www.e4me.com/support/previous.html http://parts.emachines.com/emachines/sys_lookup.asp

it also list the mobo : MB, AM37 VER 1.2 W/LAN

so upon searching for info on mobo, here it is:
http://www.fic.com.tw/product/motherboard/...px?model_id=107

this means the max speed you can get is pc2100, and the most you can get is 2gb. it has 2 dimm sockets, so if you wanted he could keep the 256 and you could get him another 256, that would make 512. or you could get him 512 and he could keep the 256, then he'd have more than he'd ever need (so i guess there is no point in that).

Yupp, that's it. The computer can support up to 2GB, but I believe it has just 2 memory slots. So, if it has 2 256MB sticks in there already one will need to come out, as you already indicated. It will bump him up to 768MB RAM.

Just a thought: I see from the specs that the computer came with Integrated video. It also has an AGP slot. Have you upgraded to an AGP video card? If not I think that would be a better solution for gaming than adding additional memory. The AGP slot is probably 4X, but the specs don't say. Just says AGP slot.

n99nyrwg, thanks for the link on the mobo.

Yupp, it's AGP 4x
