Full Version: how to mount LCD with vertical movement?

I'm trying to get a computer set up for the kids so they don't touch mine any more... I've got the spot for it, but it's at their desk where they do craft stuff. So I'd rather not just sit a monitor on it (the computer is up high on a shelf next to the desk).

I have an old 19" LCD I'm going to use for them, but I need a mount. Ideally I'd like something that can put the monitor at the proper height for them to use and then raise it up out of the way when they're not using it. Wall mount would be great, desk mount would work too as long as it got high enough.

I've looked at monoprice and didn't see anything quite like I wanted. So far the best I've come up with is using an arm like this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082808&p_id=7561&seq=1&format=3#specification) but I don't really wanna spend $70. I've got an arm similar to this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082802&p_id=4854&seq=1&format=2) - I'll have to check if it can be tightened enough to turn the whole arm 90 degrees so it moves vertically rather than horizontally.

Anyone got a better (cheap!) suggestion?

I would bet you will not be able to tighten the second one so that it will work. I have a similar one that is a desk mount, and there is no way (built in anyway) to do that.

What about something like this?

It moves vertically on a post, but you will have to tighten/untighten it manually when you want to move it.

This one is expensive, but what you want to do I think:

Why not use a regular (cheap) wall mount, and just pull the desk a couple of inches back from the wall so that it doesn't impede on their crafting space?

Well, we don't really wanna give up a couple inches of the room, plus we also want to raise the monitor to keep the craft stuff off of the monitor smile.gif The kids are 4 and 6 after all (plus 9 months, but he's not really an issue with this yet)

For that, I would recommend making a "dust cover" to put over the monitor when not in use, like everybody used to do with all of their computer equipment in the 80's. smile.gif

I have a mount that I have to use to put a flat screen into my roll top computer desk. It's called a Neo-flex by Ergotron. It allows a VESA MIS-D, 100/75, C compliant flat panel (15, 17, 19 and 20") to tilt, swivel, rotate to portrait or landscape and move up or down approx 6-8". It works great as I have to be able to move the panel all the way down until it rests on the base in order to fit into the cubby hole made for an older CRT monitor on the back of the desktop. You could mount your panel upside down and then attach the base to the shelf above and pull the monitor down when needed.
