I would like to replace an old computer with something under $400. I don't know what's good or not. Any advice?

maybe you'd like a nice netbook? What improvements are you looking for? Size? Speed? Blingbling? tongue.gif

speed. that's it.

What is the real difference between a laptop and a netbook? I am trying to decide if it is a better deal to get a netbook, or if I should spend a little bit more for a laptop. It would be for my 12 year old son for Christmas.

i'm thinking of going to bestbuy to get this: Acer laptop, 2.2 GHz Celeron, 15.4-inch screen, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and Windows 7 Premium $249 (it's posted in internet deals)

netbooks are much smaller and i don't think you can run as many programs on it than laptops. I think the question is what do you think your son will be using the netbook/laptop for? What types of applications? for us, it's simple, we need to run excel, photoshop, etc.

The Bestbuy deal was great. Doubt we'll see much lower for similar item this season.

Most 12-year-olds will be suited for any current machine. But something less powerful might mean less time gaming and more time studying tongue.gif

Netbook is generally more efficient, and easier to stow in a bookbag. Battery life and size are important for people on-the-go.

Older people often dislike the small screen and keyboard. But for young hands and eyes, it could be a perfect fit.

Of course in a few years, he'll be much bigger and want an upgrade. At this point a used item might be a good choice. Computers are not good long-term investments. Needs and wants change with time.

BestBuy's sales are down. Maybe they're focusing on customer service to increase sales....what a concept.
