So I turned on bluetooth on the computer and ipod touch 3g and ran discovery. Computer gave me a pin and ipod asked for it. All good. But they still won't connect; the ipod sees the computer (and has it listed by name) but just says not connected, and Windows just complains about not having device drivers. Any ideas? Since I don't currently have wireless I was really hoping I could get a connection through the desktop using bluetooth.

don't think the ipod will do internet or sync over BT, just audio. I use a set of BT headphones w/ my ipod for listening, but I don't think the ipod has BT profiles for anything else.
It does have wifi, so can you use that for internet on it at home? (edit: I see that you don't. Sorry. Guess if you want internet on your ipod you'll need to spring $30 or so for a wifi router.)

I was feeling lazy and hoping I could just plug in the bluetooth dongle instead of setting up wifi. I quit using wireless a year or two ago as I needed a more reliable connection.
And then when it didn't work, it annoyed me, so I'm trying to make it work even if just setting up the wifi might be easier.
(Actually I'll probably set up wifi anyway so I can connect my Wii, I just want to know why the bluetooth doesn't work. Aside from "it's an apple product")
BT devices have to have profiles built in for whatever features they want to use. For example, there's a HID profile for keyboards and mice, A2DP for audio, handsfree for some kinds of headsets, headset for other kinds, etc.
the iPod I think ONLY has a A2DP profile, so the only thing it can do over BT is talk to other A2DP devices and send audio. They'd have to add BT profiles for data to do anything else. Not sure what BT profile would be needed for doing internet over BT, but if there is one, apple didn't include it. That's very common - lots of cell phones for example only have headset/handsfree profiles and can't do stereo audio (aka music) to headphones, even though there's no hardware reason they couldn't.
