My friend buys that stuff online. I don't see why you need to buy local when you can buy online. Gold bullion is hard to come by these days. One of my friends buys collectible gold coins as an investment all the time online.

Do you need the physical gold or silver? Generally gold stocks/ETFs are the route to take if you are looking for a hedge.
eBay, with Bing cashback, and eBay Bucks, using a credit card, through PayPal. 8%+2% cash back (you have to be invited to get eBay Bucks for the 2%). You have eBay/PayPal buyer protection, as well as credit card dispute privileges, if all else fails, and you happen to get something unacceptable from the eBay seller. Use a credit card with a good, reputable bank, preferably Amex, or one of the large banks' Visa Signature or World Elite Mastercard products. You are less likely to be given trouble if a dispute becomes necessary this way. Look for bullion made by reputable, large manufacturers or governments, with distinctive recognizable markings and/or assay cards (i.e. Credit Suisse serialized 1oz gold bars with assay card, Royal Canadian Mint 100oz silver bars, etc.). You can often buy bullion below spot in this way, after electronic rebate(s). APMEX.com is a large reputable online bullion store which you can use to compare to determine whether the eBay purchase (after rebates) is a good deal or not.
If you really want the physical bullion around, also invest in a very good steel safe/vault, which weighs enough to not be carried out by two strong guys, and bolt it in and get a professionally monitored alarm system complete with perimeter alarms, cellular backup, and motion detectors inside (including the safe room), OR get a large safety deposit box at your local bank.
OR, like WTF said, you can just buy gold stocks or ETFs, or you can even buy actual gold and silver without taking physical delivery, and leave it in some bank's multi-million-dollar vault with a bunch of other people's gold, who also haven't taken delivery. No deals if you do it this way, but it seems relatively safe. Usually with these sorts of arrangements, you can choose to take delivery of the physical gold for an extra fee. Important: Do your research and ensure you are dealing with a reputable bank or company before doing this last option.
