On my Compaq Presario CQ60-420US Laptop from the Staples $319 deal I have a strange problem.

If I am in an Internet Explorer window (IE8/Vista Home Premium) and it has a horizontal scroll bar across the bottom (it doesn't do it if there is no horizontal scroll bar) if I use the scroll wheel by pushing it side to side for horizontal scrolling (Logitech VX Revolution mouse) instead of side scrolling it will launch the HP Battery check service. The Battery service is a function of the HP Health Check Service. After searching on the battery check service I have stopped the Health Check service manually and disabled it. Now when I try to side scroll the Battery Check service window pops up and then the little Vista window opens asking if I want to start the Health Check Service.

The Logitech mouse side scroll button is configured to scroll side to side in the mouse properties so it shouldn't be accessing the battery check in the first place.

Many of the google hits seem to say that if you remove the Health and Battery check programs from the computer that either the battery will no longer charge or the computer will not monitor the charged state and will overcharge and kill the battery.

I find this hard to believe, but I haven't uninstalled the health check program yet just in case there is something I don't know about HP/Compaq laptops.

Does anyone have any experience with HP laptops and this Battery Check/Health check program?

Interesting. That would be the first thing I'd suggest to look at. Is there updated Logitech software for the mouse?

It looks like there is. I just checked Logitech support and there is a new Setpoint driver dated 8/5/09 for Vista. It says:

If you have already migrated to Vista with an existing version of SetPoint, we recommend that you uninstall it and re-install a fresh copy of SetPoint to ensure your devices function properly.

So maybe it is a driver problem. Heck, I had just installed the latest driver when I got the laptop just a month ago or so.

I still have to check the laptop itself and see which driver is currently on it.

New driver is 4.80, newest driver when I got the laptop was 4.72.40.

I'll install the new one and see if it corrects the problem.

So far, so good.
