Either should suffice for basic tasks, though the Aspire probably has a little better processor. The base video on both machines is probably a little anemic for serious gaming.

One point: Both of these machines come with 64 bit Windows Vista (to support the 6/8gb of system memory). If he has a printer, scanner, or other peripheral from his old system he'll be planning on using with the new one, make sure to check to see if 64 bit Vista drivers are available. I have several acquaintances that purchased machines with 64 bit Vista that subsequently couldn't find compatible drivers for their older printers/scanners. Neither of these machines is a good deal if it also requires you to replace an otherwise good printer or scanner because you can't get a compatible driver for it.
Allie
ok sorry if this is a dumb question, but is the 64 bit vista an old version? he uses my printer, and the only other thing he would be hooking up would be his zune. So should I look for a different kind of vista?

No, it's newer.
In particular, it's often too new for older peripherals.

I made the mistake of ordering a machine with 64-bit Vista, only to find out that drivers weren't available for my very nice AIO laser copier/printer. Just make sure there's a 64-bit driver available for your printer, and for the Zune.

thanks for the help.

I'm sorry, I just need to comment on this. Each system has a quad core processor. To say they will suffice for basic tasks is kind of like saying a Corvette will suffice for daily commuting. The capabilities of these processors are phenonminal. The Video Card in the HP, the ATI Radeon HD4650 w/1GB Discrete Video Memory, is no sloutch either. These are powerful systems.

That being said, I personally would not purchase the Aspire because of the Q8300 processor. It's a great processor, but it lacks a feature found in many other Intel processors: Virtualization Technology Support. It may not sound important (and maybe it's not), but in the future if he ever wants to be able to run virtual PC software (like Windows 7 XP Mode) the VT feature is important.

As far as the Pavilion Desktop with AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core Processor, do you have a model number of the system, or model number of the processor? There are different Phenom X4 Quad-Core Processors on the market, some better than others as with the Intel Quad Core.

I personally don't like 64-bit operating systems due to some compatability issues, but I wouldn't stop anyone from purchasing it either. Just be aware of the pros and cons. I have too much software that doesn't work correctly with 64-bit Windows even when running in 32-bit mode and, as other have stated, sometimes it can be a pain to find system drivers for older peripherals. The major advantage to having 64-bit Windows is that it can recognize more Memory than 32-bit Windows. 32-bit Windows has a memory limitation of 4GB (a little less than that in reality) where 64-bit Windows has a memory limitation of 8GB for Vista Home Premium and 128GB for Vista Business or Ultimate.

Edit: All depending how how much multitasking is done with the compyter, 4GB should be way more than enough. How much memory does the old Dell have? 512MB, 1GB, 2GB? Seems like people are going memory crazy these days. IMO, what's the sense in having 8GB of memory if it's not going to be utlilized.

IMO, for the difference in price, I would get a quad core processor. The E7500 processor is at the lower end of the Core 2 Duo processors. This is not to say that it's bad or that it's not fast (it's plenty fast). To me it sounds like you don't replace computers very often (as most don't) and you're looking to keep this new one for a long time. I'd say to get as much newer technology as budget allows.

BTW, ask 10 different people the same question and you'll get 10 different answers smile.gif
Allie
so you would get the acer over either HP?
Alan
I'm leaning more towards the Acer.

Might also check out a local shop or find someone who build PC. Most hardware parts, including the motherboard, come with a 3 year warranty. Given the trend to stuff as most as possible into a PC, a good power supply with ample wattage should be a priority. If you go this route, ensure software is legit and you receive the orginal discs.

my older son who is away a college can build one,but he might be home until thanksgiving. Not sure what I am going to do at this moment. besides scream

WOW does not have very high system requirements, and it sounds like that's the most intensive application that you would be using. You should be able to get a PC for under $400 that can handle that just fine.

I'd rather spend $300 twice on new computers than spend $600 once and keeping it twice as long. But that's just my philosophy.

If you were happy with the old machine, you could probably find an identical one on ebay pretty cheap, and just use the motherboard/processor from it. What model was it? But after 3-4 years, you might just be ready for an upgrade.
Allie
i am not happy with Dell. DS1 has a dell laptop that I have had more trouble with, but his is still under warranty.

So at the moment I am leaning toward the acer,I have read they have terrible CS
