Have you tried connecting a monitor to it?

Do you see any BIOS screen when you first turn it on? The screen that says something like "Hit F2 to enter setup".

Thx garsh for the reply..
NO there is nothing on the screen its just black... just make the sound of starting and then power botton blink and then nothing..stay like that..

You have said try to connect a moniter to laptop? confused.gif I am sorry I am not a computer person how do you do that?
cron

your laptop probably has a port like the above. Now see what type of cable is being used on your external monitor. If it's a cable that will match up to that port, you're good to go.

After you've connected the cable, you may have to press fn+f4 to toggle between the built-in and external monitor. (If video doesn't show up on the external monitor)

Thx cron will try that...

To me it sounds like a hardware issue. Lets start with the simple things first. I would try these steps initially, but before doing anything search the HP website for the manual and read about which panels to unscrew and how to remove things. I don't have time right now to search for the manual, but I'll do it later.

- Reseat the memory. There should be a panel (or two...or three) on the bottom of the unit that you can unscrew. Under one of the panels is the memory. You can unseat then reseat the memory and see if that helps.

- Drain the power. Unplug the power supply, remove the battery and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Try powering on with just the power supply plugged in, then with just the battery connected, then both.

- Reseat the hard drive. As with the memory, the hard drive may be under one of the panels on the bottom of the unit or it could slide out from the side. Just unattach and reattach.

There are a few other things we can try, but these are the easiest. Do them first.

May need to replace the power adapter.

I know HP & Compaq laptops used to be notorious for breaking their power adapter ports. Is that still a common problem?

Hawahawai, can you try removing the battery from the laptop, plugging in the AC adapter, and then see if it turns on at all? (that is, do you still get fan noises & power button light, or nothing at all)?

yes.gif It usually happens over time when there's too much tension on the plug. In this case I think it's the power adapter itself that's not giving enough power. Lately I've been seeing alot of this with Dell power adapters. I've been replacing them with a Targus power adapter. They come with different connector tips and can be used power more than one device (but just one at a time). Monoprice sells an OEM version for under $40 (the cheapest I've seen) link.

Cron, Garsh, Alan thank you all, very much for helping me to resolve this issue.
I manage to unseat and reseat the memory modules with your instructions, after that restarted the computer pressed f8.

There it go, Compaq started to work.

Thats why we all need friends like YOU
Again thanks a bunch
kas
Might be wise to run a program like Memtest. Look under the Good Software for a link. Note you will need a program to unzip the Memtest download. Again, there is a link in the Good Software thread.
Alan
That's great! Glad you got it working.

Geek Squad would have said it needs a motherboard replacement, then would have tried to sell you a new laptop with all the extra fixin's lol.gif

bang.gif bang.gif again same thing..
Alan
Does the same thing happen whether running on battery power or plugged in? I'm thinking it could be a bad memory module or power adapter.

Specs shows it has two modules. Might think about buying a 1 Meg module on sale. If money is an issue, go find an eraser that is clean. Remove the module(s) and gently clean the contacts with the eraser. Where the module is seat, hit with compress air or blow on to remove any crap.
