Generally, if you can afford it, you would do best to go to a bike shop and spend $300-$400 on an entry-level bike. For $150, you're going to get something that's not very good. What do you want it for? Commuting? This is a dual-suspension mountain bike, not a good choice for commuting. Let me know more about what you need it for.

sorry for threadjacking, but this seems like the appropiate thread to ask questions.

Are there decent entry level bikes available at stores such as sports authority in the $250 range?

Buying a gift for a friend who would use it for recreational purposes. No off road stuff, just biking in NYC.

I still say better to go to a bike shop, and get something in the $300-$400 range. Big box stores are more likely to sell you a poorly tuned overpriced piece of junk, but I'm sure there are exceptions.

Check out this, for instance:
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/wow/#bikes

The 7.3 Fx is $499, which would be excellent for city riding with the right tires. Or for $339 the 3900 is fine, although it has front suspension you can tighten that up and put on some commuting tires. That's just an example with Trek, there are plenty of other brands.

Nope, not at all. Shoddy frame-making, cheap components, poorly tuned.

One idea for someone on a budget is to look at 'good' bikes that a bike shop might have as trade-ins. I'm willing to bet that some riders don't begin with the top of the line; but will trade up if they have the dough. IMHO, avoid the Craiglist ads, unless a valid receipt can be produced by the seller. Also if you want to avoid the police, avoid the friend of a friend or the flea market vendors.

The used bike market is a good idea if you can find a decent seller. One problem is people tend to overprice used bikes (although not always) so you have to be careful. Ebay is tough because shipping fees can kill the deal, unless you find local. And with ebay or craigslist I often find 2 types of ads:

(1) Here is this thing, I don't know anything about it, I think it's a bike
(2) Here is this vintage completely awesome bike I'm charging 2x what it would have cost new

So you need to know what you're doing to avoid those 2 things. But if you have a friend who knows bikes, they can help.

dewolfxy how do you feel about the following brands? Which is would be reputable?

Diamondback
Columbia
iron horse
sims
k2

mongoose
titan
kawasaki
mantis

Sports authority is having a sale and theres a F&F coupon too. I might have to buy from them because finding a local bike place in NYC is difficult.
dewolfxy
I would pick Iron Horse or K2 from that list. Or maybe Mongoose or Diamondback. I choose those basically because those companies also sell reasonable high-end bikes, even though what you're looking at is one of their low-end models.

There are a lot of bike shops in NYC:

This seems like a good shop. Their website shows a lot of options. I see bikes as low as $300-$400 that seem decent:
