Ugh. I came to work today ready to move my files from my old computer to my new one. I left Windows Easy Transfer running all day yesterday and last night transferring my files to an external HDD. I got to work this morning ready to finish the transfer to the new computer running Windows 7 and it said it had just recovered from a critical error. Now I can't get it to do practically anything without getting the blue screen. I went to Windows Updates and it says it has never run. I went to do a System Restore and it says no restore points have been created. I tried viewing or attaching the two log files listed in the error message, but it says access denied.

It was running absolutely fine yesterday. I had installed hardware but it seemed to be running fine. I had tested some applications and used IE most of the day.

What should my next step be?

I ran Dell Diagnostics and got this error:

Error code 0123

Msg: Error Code 2000-0123

Msg: Memory – integrity test failed

This is the highest rated memory I could find. I'm going to run a more thorough memory test and see what it finds. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Memtest86 is still running. Does it matter that the system shipped with ECC memory but I replaced it with non-ECC memory?

What's the model number? Some of the Dell servers are picky about ECC, and others are not.

Precision T3400

Thanks!

Ugh. I think I found my problem. From the dell user manual:

QUOTE
Type: 667-MHz ECC and non-ECC and 800-MHz ECC DDR2 SDRAM

I had no idea that it wouldn't accept 800-MHz non-ECC!! Ugh.

Anyone know a work around?
Superman
OK. Now I'm just an idiot. I bought and installed Mushkin 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500). I was assuming since this was a powerful computer, it would take this RAM.

Now my question is... Did I fry this RAM by putting it in here? Did I hurt my mobo? I'm taking it out and replacing it with the mere 2GB that came w/ the system. I'll have to order some more today.
Alan
I don't think you did any damage to the ram or motherboard. Usually when uncompatible memory is installed you get errors, blue screens, random reboots, freezing, etc. Replacing with compatible memory usually fixes these issues. One thing maybe to be concerned about is corrupt system (or other) files that weren't properly written to the hard drive when the error occurred. Replace the meory and use the computer for a while. If everything appears to be working OK I wouldn't worry about it.

In any case, you'll need to reinstall Windows 7 before it expires anyway. Although this is a stable release candidate there may still be bugs that need to be fixed before general retail availability. The official release date is Oct. 22, but that can certainly change.

Thanks, Alan. Do you recommend reinstalling it now or waiting until later? I'm about to make this my primary PC.

Personally I'd reinstall when the official release comes out. I don't know if you saw it - a Best Buy memo was leaked concerning pre-selling Windows 7 for a very good price.
Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade $ 49.99 USD
Windows 7 Professional Upgrade $ 99.99 USD
NOTE: Professional is not Ultimate.

Thanks, Alan! I'll take your advice! (Yes, I saw the memo.)

I've just started having the same problem; when I got my T3400 I looked up how much memory and what speed, but didn't think to check ECC vs non-ECC :-(

Superman, since I assume you're researching what's the best ram that the machine will take, lmk what you figure out...I guess I need to replace mine as well tongue.gif

I didn't do too much research, so you might find something better. I ordered Crucial part #CT768016. They guarantee compatibility even though it's non-ECC 800mhz. FedEx attempted delivery today, but I was out of the office. I guess I'll have to wait until Monday!

Side note: I put the 2GB of RAM that was shipped w/ the T3400 back in it until my other arrives. I'm really impressed with the speed of Win7 64-bit. This machine has a little slower processor and much slower RAM than my other main system which has 4GB running Vista Ultimate (32-bit). Even with only 2GB, this system is WAY faster. And the T3400 is virtually silent. I didn't realize how loud my other system is!

LMK how it works; I'm using 8gb G.Skill PC2-8500 and I'm getting really annoyed with the BSOD tongue.gif

There's a chance that some vendors will offer a free upgrade to win 7 when you buy a vista machine starting June 26

http://www.pcworld.com/article/166563/wind...tarts_soon.html

QUOTE
Some PC vendors and sellers will begin a coupon program on June 26 to entitle people who buy premium versions of Microsoft Windows Vista to upgrade to the new Windows 7 operating system when it arrives later this year, but the upgrade offers may not be free. Offers will vary by vendor and retailer.

If the vendors decide to charge for the upgrade, it might be lower than what bestbuy is offering. Hopefully many vendors will offer the upgrade at cost.

QUOTE
PC vendors will have to pay between US$9 and US$15 per PC to include an upgrade coupon with a new computer, said an executive at one Taiwanese PC maker. People will use information on the coupon to download a copy of Windows 7 from a Microsoft Web site once the software is on sale, he said, and Microsoft will also send the holder a copy of the operating system on a disc.

How's that working for you? Mine's gotten a LOT worse lately - I used to be able to avoid the BSOD just by shutting the computer down once a day, but I've gotten it 3 times today so I guess I need to get around to replacing it tongue.gif
