Google Wave: Five Things You Must Know

Google Wave: What It Is And How It Works

another one that's been making the rounds. It basically brings together email, instant messaging, document sharing, and blogging all into one package with a gmail-like interface.

It will be interesting to see if this catches on. It seems like Google has invested quite a bit in it. It could be a game changer, IMO.

While the "Google Wave" preview has some pretty neat eye-candy, the things that make it all possible are the new Google Wave Federation Protocol and the Google Wave API. I like to think of them as fixing everything that was wrong with the SMTP, POP, and IMAP (eg - email) protocols. It's the primitives provided by these protocols that make all the neat things built on top of them possible.

This really could be a huge game changer.

I was reading a bit about this last night, but I haven't gotten into the details yet. I did a paper the other year (which unfortunately never got published tongue.gif) on the need to update email protocols to stop spam; it'll be interesting to see what approach Google took.

Has anyone watched the demo video? Wow! I like what Wave can do. Absolutely fantastic. If you have the time, watch the entire video (1hr 20min). http://wave.google.com/

Yikes! Who has time for that?

Wait, I'm at work. Maybe I do! tongue.gif

I'm going to have to look into this, I read about it and I still can't figure it out.

I left the video going a week or so ago on a 2nd computer on my desk. It is a long video, but very interesting and exciting.

Google to Launch Google Wave Public Beta in Sept.
07.21.09
by Mark Hachman

Google will open its Google Wave service up to the public beginning on on Sept. 30, the company said this week.

Google launched Google Wave at its Google IO conference at the end of May, but so far the Web giant has restricted the service to 6,000 or so developers, Dan Peterson, a product manager for Google Wave, wrote on the company's blog. Now, 100,000 members of the public will be invited to try out the service.

Google Wave is a unique hybrid of email, chat, and a blog, and some expect it to eventually replace some of Google's other applications.

"In other news: this morning we announced that we plan to start extending the Google Wave preview beyond developers on September 30th. This will take place on wave.google.com rather than the separate "sandbox" instance we are currently using, and we plan to involve about 100,000 users," Peterson wrote. "In addition to the developers already using Wave, we will invite groups of users from the hundreds of thousands who offered to help report bugs when they signed up on wave.google.com."

Google did not say how invitations would be handled.

Google is currently working on the "speed, stability, and usability of Google Wave," Peterson wrote.

Google started giving out invites yesterday. Anyone get an invite? I didn't.
wmspringer
Haven't seen mine either.

Nothing here either. Guess we will have to beg others for one of their 8 invites.

Now what? Anybody want to be waving at me? winkle ;-)
Alan
Got an invite today. Accepted it. Haven't had time to check it out today - probably won't have time until the weekend.

I got an invite too. I logged in, but that's about as far as I got with it.

That seems to capture it pretty well. lol.gif

LOL @ that pic!

I signed up last night and started waving.

Seems cool, but really limited to just text only for now... at least I couldn't find a way to upload pics and stuff like they showed in the demonstration. Or maybe it's because I'm using NoScript and it's just blocking some of the neater parts of Wave.

EDIT: Looks like you can do more than text, such as add a yes/no/maybe poll, maps, Google search.

It's still very beta, probably even alpha. Runs kind of slow on a netbook. Can't delete individuals from waves, so whoever you add to a wave is there permanently, at least for now.

Really neat to see replies in real time, but probably quicker to just do a video conference so you don't have to wait for people to finish typing.

If you're not using Chrome, I strongly suggest you try it. It helps with javascript-intensive programs like wave.

You can't delete people from waves, but you can reply to a subset of people in a wave, such that your little "wavelet" is not seen by others who belong to the rest of the wave.

I'm using Iron instead of Chrome. I thought it was supposed to be like Chrome, but apparently it doesn't work with Wave.

Yeah, I noticed that. It'd still be nice to delete people you accidentally added. I hope they add that soon.

Have there been any sort of upgrades/improvements since Wave started its preview?

No, that should be fine. I guess wave is just a little too intensive for your netbook.

Mostly infrastructure and stability improvements. I don't think the interface has changed much.

Wave doesn't work at all with Iron. Google says it's not a compatible browser, so I ended up using FF and that's what was slow. Maybe I'll download Chrome again. Wave works fine in FF on my MacBook, but that has much better specs than my Eee.

I don't have a Windows machine to try out Iron right now.

Have you tried changing the user agent string to see if you can "trick" wave into thinking that it's Chrome?

I thought about that after I posted, but ended up going to sleep instead. tongue.gif

I'll try that later once I figure out what the user agent string for the current version of Chrome is.

EDIT: Found it here: http://www.useragentstring.com/pages/Chrome/

EDIT 2: I made the UA.ini file in my Iron directory and pasted the Chrome string in it. Wave works now. smile.gif Noticeably faster than FF. biggrin.gif

After a few months of using it, I think I'm one of the minority of people who absolutely LOVES Google Wave. Most people I know end up using it for a couple of days and then leaving shortly after that. sad.gif

I haven't exactly used Wave for its intended purpose though. I mostly use it as an alternative for PMs on forums because most forums have limits on how many PMs you can have at a time... and it's been great for that since I don't have to bother with going through and cleaning out my PM box all the time. tongue.gif

Also, I really have only been Waving with one person (since my other contacts don't use it anymore), but me and the other person I use Wave with are both hooked on it. I use it almost on a daily basis... sometimes more often than I use email.

I really hope Google keeps Wave around for a while since I don't know of any alternatives like it that I would use if it went away.

I didn't really care much for Buzz, but I heart.gif Wave!

I'm sad. I still love Wave. I was hoping it'd be around for a long time. Ah well.

All is not lost! If you remember, the wave protocol was released by Google to allow others to implement their own wave services.

Well, Novell has a project to do just that: Novell Pulse

Google wave is already closed. Another one unsuccessful Google project.
