For the moment I ended up buying this but will continue to look around before picking it up. Also use it as leverage at other places. The sale ends tonight and also after my purchase there is none left available in my area for pickup

ended up now getting just about an hour ago one from lowes. showed them my invoice and item and they came as close as they could..only $47 more at $547 for a similar one they have. which was regular price of $758. actually maybe a little better since it has a 12inch burner where I think the other one may not have had. same brand and all other features. They are delivering it in a couple of hours. So after the delivery rebate the $50 more cost is better than having to go pick the other one up, install it and dispose of the old one myself

Yupp, my way of thinking also. There's always an opportunity cost and $50 in the grand scheme of things is nothing.

I guess now is the time to grab the good buys on appliances while businesses are cleaning out inventory. Too many negatives are predicted for the ecomony in the near future. Going rate to pick up a stove or fridge at the curb is $25 around here, unless your trash provider provides that as a 'freebie'.

I would like to know if the Frigidaire range when in convection mode turns off the fan when the oven door is opened.

no. old one had smooth top as well so used to that. It was a kenmore that had a known issue which sears never acknowleged of broiler coming on sometimes for no reason totally heating to max and burning. latest though is after having it powered off after doing that this last time it did not even heat at all whether top or oven as it had done previous. After years of having to deal with the problem it was time to replace

Our Jenn-Aire convection fan would turn off when the door was opened, but it took it a second or two before it slowed down. You have to be careful too, putting your face too close with the door open while checking the cooking progress in convection mode can melt your eyebrows and eyelashes. I got hit with a blast of hot air a few times while checking on a pizza.

Note that convection mode is great for top browning a pizza without overcooking the bottom crust. You cook it in normal mode until the almost cooked then turn on the convection for the last 2-5 minutes while turning up the heat just enough to kick the heat source back on.

Commerical units, i.e. Viking, ran as a convection oven have both fans running when the double vertical doors are opened. Yes, your face does come away a little red. While a double stacked set-up made have racks for 8 hotel size pans per oven, there is uneven cooking. Basically, one winds up rotating sheets or pans upward, like if you are baking cookies.

A good pair of oven mitts kept dry helps remove things from a hot convection unit.

After my wife finding a deal on a Kenmore Elite 22.6cf unit in white at Sears for $839 that had a cold water dispenser in one door (no ice, just water so it still has two full doors for inside storage) and was the last one, floor display (original price was $2099) we ended up going with THIS Whirlpool Gold stainless look 24.8cf unit. We got them to give us the 30% off price of the cheaper white and black unit for the stainless colored one. Seeing that it started out $100 more than the white/black ones the total discount ended up being approx 40%.

We have two Lowes within 15 miles of each other and our closest store originally said absolutely no to using the extra 10% off in the store but the other store offered an additional 10% without even asking about using the USPS coupon. Once I brought the printout from the second store back to the first they suddenly were OK with doing 30% off (without using the coupon).

I tried to use the USPS coupon at the check out since the order they put in the computer for our sale did not list any discounts, just the total agreed upon sales price. At the register the cashier said no problem with using the coupon but when scanned they kept coming up as already been used. I even went out to the truck and brought in an unopened USPS moving kit and that coupon showed already used as well. The cashier said to bring it back in in a few days and see if it can be applied by reringing the sale. I may give it a shot at both stores after the sale is over.

Dagnabit!

I guess I should have thougt this thing through more fully.

So the wife is happy, she finally gets her new big frige. We get to get rid of the basement frige that came with the house, circa 1977. So the old kitchen frige will replace the old basement frige and give me more room for my pop and pizza along with the other kitchen overflow. Lowes agreed to move in the new frige, move the old kitchen frige to the basement and haul away the old basement frige all for the FAR $59 delivery charge.

Easy enough so far, right?

Well in my mind's eye it was a pretty straight forward swap. BUT, in reality there is no way to get the old frige from the basement out and the old kitchen one into the basement without moving half the stuff in my shop totally out of the way, like across the basement and/or outside under the carport. I have been going non-stop for the last 8 hours and I think that I have enough room cleared but still have to figure out how I'm going to preserve the contents of both refers until the new ones have a chance to cool. Plus I have to tear apart the old kitchen frige and find and fix the leak that started when we had the auto defrost unit replaced a few years back. (I thought it was just a plugged drain line but I have tried blowing it out with the compressor and then disassembled the freezer looking for a blocked drain line but found nothing.) Every time the auto defrost runs the water drains into the interior of the frige until it fills up the area under the crisper drawers and then it overflows to the floor. Other than that the old kitchen unit runs and looks like new and is a very early version of Energy Star so we should be seeing at least some electric savings by getting rid of the 1970s unit.

The new Whirlpool says that it uses less electricity per year than a 60 watt light bulb. (I think the 1970s unit uses enough to run a 6 person hot tub for a year). At least I won't have to manually defrost it every two months anymore.

Then tomorrow after the new one is in and the old one is fixed I have to put everything back again bang.gif bang.gif bang.gif

Oh crap. Well, at least you can't say you have nothing to do.

Well, I'm glad I purchased the dishwasher with installation. When the house was built the water supply & drain lines were run, then the cabinets put in place. The holes that were cut are very tight. The installer had to drill some new holes inside the cabinets and fish the new supply lines through. It's not a simple job. If I started it I'd be cursing up and down, then calling a plumber to finish it for me.
dejavu
oh geez. Wings...don't hurt your back!!

our current dishwasher is NOT attached to the corean countertop- rather it is braced in with that expanding foam on one side. I do not know why they didn't drill the countertop but I don't think I want them doing that with the new dishwasher???

'Dollars for dishwashers' appliance rebate program coming
By JOHN BARTOSEK
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, August 04, 2009

Since the "cash for clunkers" program went from a billion to broke in just a week, the $17.5 million in the state's "dollars for dishwashers" program may fly just as quickly.

Like the car rebate, which was "almost economic lighter fluid" for dealers, a run on appliances is likely to follow - and just in time for Christmas, says the state energy office director.

You don't hear much about Florida's Energy Star appliance rebate program because the rules aren't set yet. The plan calls for money back for buying a dishwasher, refrigerator, clothes washer, freezer or other appliance - all more likely to fit a household budget than a new car these days.

The deadline is next week for Florida to apply for the federal stimulus money, and Jeremy Susac says, "There's no doubt we'll do it." His job in Gov. Crist's energy office is to work with the Florida Energy and Climate Commission to set the rules. The first workshop is Monday in Tallahassee.

Among the questions:

Will it be offered only to low-income families, or be first-come-first-served?
The broader the target, of course, the faster the money will go. The state's solar energy rebate program, in effect since 2006, consistently uses all the money allocated before the year is up.

Is that new refrigerator you buy this month eligible, or must you wait until the program officially starts, likely in mid-December?
The feds will decide if it's retroactive, Susac says.

Will it apply only to American-made appliances?
"I will recommend 'yes,' " Susac says.

What's the rebate worth?
Paybacks will vary, probably a couple hundred dollars per appliance, and the state may set a total rebate limit per household. The list of eligible appliances isn't set, but all must carry the "Energy Star" rating.

"Anything will help," says Bobby Johnson, senior vice president for Brandsmart, a major appliance dealer. "The key is to make it (the rebate) substantial money. If they do it for front-load washer and dryer, for example, that's good for retail, good for the consumer, good for the environment. It just depends on the details."

You do know some of that stimulus money is being used to train the unemploy(able) to become Green Energy techs. In other words, after completing the tax funded program, these techs will go around making their neighbors cribs more energy efficient. Of course being low-income or living in the right zip code is mandatory.

Around here, the electric and gas companies got folks convinced to add a buck or two each month to the payment. This slush fund is used to cover those who are either going dark or cold by paying their highest bill. Also many of the city senior citizens are given a new window A/C unit, except too often the bars on the windows keeps the community organizer from installing the unit.

Just a minor detail, until the trade unions decide to push seniority to ensure its card carrying members are working, if commerical and residental building slow down. This will put those 'trained' newbies behind the eight ball and add to the bad blood between the trade unions and minorities. IMHO, it's a stupid idea to make a policy to pay folks union scale with benefits when typically they don't have a long and steady work history.

Stimulus cash for weatherization still unspent

QUOTE
Tom Markey, a stimulus coordinator at the U.S. Department of Labor, said there is no reason to wait. The Departments of Energy and Labor said in their July 24 letter to states and nonprofits receiving the money that "state and local agencies should be weatherizing homes now."

"Davis-Bacon prevailing wage rates for residential construction exist in just about every part of the country, therefore, any state or community-action agency could have begun work as soon as they received their funds by paying these existing prevailing wage rates," Markey said.

Several recipients of that letter told the AP said they are wary of following such advice because, they say, federal officials have previously been unclear on whether existing wage levels for other occupations would apply to weatherization work. They also reject the suggestion from federal officials they could simply issue back pay should the weatherization rates eventually be set at a higher wage, saying it could cause an administrative mess.

Lowes didn't have the SHE45 model I wanted, not even for special delivery in my area. Sears has it, but I don't feel like running around to stores for a dishwasher. We were told by the Lowe's guy that Bosch discontinued the model and there will be another model replacing it, but it's not in their system yet.

We went with the SHE43 instead. The SHE45 has some features that the SHE43 doesn't, but I'm not concerned about it. The guts are the same. However, if they had the SHE45 available I would have gotten it.

Price was $478.40 with the 20% off. We also needed a flexible water supply line and a power cord. I'm really surprised the dishwasher doesn't come with these accessories. I didn't want to use the power cord or water supply line from my old dishwasher as they're 15-16 years old. The small cost for these items is nothing compared to an electrical problem or potential water leak.

We didn't go for the credit offer (free delivery, hookup & haul-away after rebate). I'm not getting another credit card to save $100 on a deal due to my stance against getting more credit cards (don't need or want them).

Bottom line - my wife is happy, so it's a great deal smile.gif

For the same money I still think we could have gotten a lifetime supply of soap & sponges lol.gif

apparently they were out of the model in my area as well...I am back at square 1.
they have changed the models and what Lowe's is offering me as a replacement isn't even on the Bosch site. I can still get 20% + 10% deal. what a pain!!

Latest in Stimulus: 'Cash for Refrigerators'
Coming this fall, a clunkers-type program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances will authorize rebates of $50 to $200

A $300 million cash-for-clunkers-type federal program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances provides a glimmer of hope for beleaguered makers of washing machines and dishwashers, but it's probably not enough to lift companies such as Whirlpool (WHR) and Electrolux out of the worst down cycle in the sector's history.

Beginning late this fall, the program authorizes rebates of $50 to $200 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances. The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. Program details will vary by state, and the Energy Dept. has set a deadline of Oct. 15 for states to file formal applications. The Energy Dept. expects the bulk of the $300 million to be awarded by the end of November. (Unlike the clunkers auto program, consumers won't have to trade in their old appliances.)

"These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement announcing the plan. Only appliances covered by the Energy Star seal will qualify. In 2008, about 55% of newly produced major household appliances met those standards, which are set by the Energy Dept. and Environmental Protection Agency.

The money can't come soon enough for the home appliance industry, which is mired in an unprecedented sales slump that began when the housing market cooled in 2006. Since then that slump has worsened considerably. Shipments of washers, dryers, refrigerators, and ovens dropped 10% in 2008 and are down 15% through July, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. "It's brutal," says Raymond James (RJF) analyst Sam Darkatsh.

a marketing push around rebates
The leading appliance makers have felt the pinch. Whirlpool of Benton Harbor, Mich., which controls about 40% of the U.S. market, has seen its sales drop 20% through the first two quarters of this year. North American shipments for its Stockholm-based rival Electrolux, meanwhile, have dropped for a dozen consecutive quarters. Both companies have laid off hundreds of workers, and General Electric (GE) mulled shutting down an entire refrigerator plant earlier this year until deciding to keep it open with a reduced workforce.

Not surprisingly, appliance makers cheered the news. Electrolux spokesman Tony Evans calls the federal program a "great opportunity to encourage consumers to replace their old appliances." Lately, cash-strapped consumers have chosen to repair, rather than replace, hobbled dishwashers and other water-intensive appliances, according to industry analysts. Electrolux says it is readying "aggressive" marketing programs that will run parallel with the rebates, and it's reasonable to expect appliance makers and retailers will devise additional discounts to amplify the rebates' appeal. "We will be ready to go when the new incentive programs hit the market," Evans said.

Unlike the popular, $3 billion cash-for-clunkers vehicle program, which ends on Aug. 24, there's no guarantee that hard-hit consumers are prepared to plump for new washers, stoves, and fridges. The federal outlay will piggyback on rebate programs for energy-saving appliances that have existed for years in more than 25 states, but which have largely failed to spur demand. Home improvement retailers like Home Depot (HD) and Lowe's (LOW) have also offered deep discounts on big-ticket appliances lately, with little impact.

"The cash-for-clunkers [program] had a discernible value proposition for the consumer, because he knows how much his [clunker] is worth," says Darkatsh, the Raymond James analyst. "With appliances, there is no trade-in. You can walk into Home Depot and get a great deal on a home appliance any time you want one. Why would it drum up sales now?" Laura Champine, an analyst with Cowen & Co. (COWN), agrees. "I'm not sure if it will be as powerful as cash for clunkers because there is something compelling about that $4,500 discount," she says. "Also, a new car is more fun than a new dishwasher. So I'm not sure if it will be as much of a driver, but any driver is welcome right now."

Stock Market Overreaction
Analysts also believe that the stock market's reaction to the program is overblown. Whirlpool's shares rose 6% on Aug. 20 when news of the program circulated, and climbed another 5% the following session. "That's silly," says Darkatsh. He estimates that in a best-case scenario the rebates will equate to about $240 million in incremental sales for Whirlpool. But that's unlikely, as it assumes that every American buying under the voucher program would not have done so otherwise. "The vast majority would have bought them anyway," as purchases of appliances such as fridges and washing machines are far less discretionary than, say, cars or big-screen televisions, Darkatsh says.

The recession's ability to blunt the program's impact was underscored by a call to the California Energy Commission to discuss its approach to the rebate program. The entire state office is on unpaid furlough each Friday in August; no one picked up the telephone.

Sorry, I didn't see the post until now.

We like it. Washes dishes and is quiet....not silent, but quiet. We can have the dishwasher running in the kitchen and I can be watching TV in the den - I can hear it, but it think the fridge is louder. If in the kichen you can tell it's running, but it's no where near as loud as the other one. I'd recommend it.

With a sale and the 'Cash for Refrigerators' promo I think we'll end up with a new fridge soon. Any recommendations? I like side by side w/ water & ice maker. What's wrong with the current fridge? Nothing, but the wife is hinting (OK, more than hinting lol.gif ).

I love side-by-side but it seems to small for our family, and we got a BIG one. (26.5 cu ft.)
just thinking out loud if bottom freezer/French door would have been better.
lots of previous recalls on LG with French Doors.
we have LG (no recall on our model)
older model of this
it had a version with a TV on the other side.

I love to hate LG. I like the fridge but the icemaker gets clogged with ice a lot if you don't use enough ice.
sometimes.

The only real problem we have had is that the cabinet doors above had to be taken off because the fridge was just too high with the door hinges. so measure carefully.

oh. and I really like how this is a touchpad and not "paddles" to get water out of the door. only it gets blue green algae around the edges and I have to bleach it occasionally. no.gif
WingsOverVA
We just got a new bottom freezer/French door style model. I like the idea of side by side but they aren't even a consideration in our household as the freezer section cannot hold a frozen Chicago pizza unless you store it on it's side.

There were models we looked at with the french doors that had cold filtered water dispensers either in the door (since it is just a water line there is no space lost in the door) or just inside the door (a button and spigot located just inside the left door frame).

Sears Hopes To Woo Shoppers With Federal Rebates On Home Appliances

August 28, 2009

SUN-TIMES STAFF

Sears, Roebuck and Co. is hoping to woo shoppers looking for federal government rebates that will be available on home appliances this fall. The rebates, expected to be available in November, are part of the Obama administration's stimulus program and are designed to boost sales of more energy-efficient home appliances.

The amount of individual customer rebates that will be offered in Illinois and across the country are still being finalized, but Sears said customers will be able to learn if the appliances they are interested in qualify for the new upcoming rebates by going to Sears.com/energystar and entering their zip code, or by visiting any Sears full-line store. Customers visiting the site and the stores can also learn what rebates are already available for which they may qualify, the company said.

My 20+ year old White/Westinghouse washer might be nearing its end, so the timing may be just about right for a new machine...

Sound like a way to keep you from price shopping at competitors. I bet there is a similar national model or two, except there is a slight different with the Lowe's special. Call LG customer service and see if someone can help you through this mess.

<sigh> I think my washer has bit the dust...it's a heavy duty White-Westinghouse we bought @ Best Buy, when it was still mainly an appliance store...I don't mind buying a new machine...it's cleaning out the laundry room to get it in there that will be the major pain... bang.gif I think we'll probably get a new dryer while we're at it since it's one I brought into the marriage nearly 25 years ago... heart.gif ...so much for my first SS check arriving later this month...
