Here is a simple overview of how a rebate with CPG works. Company X puts a rebate on its product, let’s say for $20. Company X expects to pay out 5000 of these rebates to consumers. Company X would then put the $100,000 needed to cover that rebate into CPG’s bank accounts. CPG basically escrows the money for consumers. CPG is trusted with this money in order to make sure the consumer is “safe.”

We have it from good sources currently that CPG owes consumers somewhere in the neighborhood of $9M to $12M worth of rebates. The problem here is that CPG currently only has about $3M in cash to cover that $9M-$12M in rebates owed to the consumer. Where that money has gone to is anyone’s guess and we will leave speculation up the law enforcement authorities and the courts.

I rarely ever do rebates, but did one with them recently and it came yesterday. smile.gif

Besides that, I don't have any other outstanding rebates.

Rebates have always been a risk/reward game. It's not for the faint of heart (or the slack of record-keeping). And there's always a small risk that you won't get paid no matter what you do.

But the rewards can be VERY nice. Free color laser printers and laptops are just a few things we've all earned here, not to mention tons of smaller stuff.

If you have a rebate from Canon...

Important Rebate Info

November 14, 2008.

Dear Valued Customer,

This is an official message from Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The third party rebate processing company that was responsible for processing rebate claims and issuing mail-in-rebate checks for Canon-brand printer and video products (along with many other products of a number of other companies) filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition earlier today. The funds provided to them by Canon U.S.A., Inc. (and other companies) apparently are no longer available to satisfy the rebate checks such company issued on behalf of Canon and other companies. Regrettably, as a result, you should not cash the refund check you recently received for such products, as it likely will bounce. We apologize for any inconvenience, delay or confusion this may cause. We are doing everything in our power to promptly rectify the situation.

Accordingly, we request that you take the following actions:

* If you are holding or receive a rebate check for printer or video products which is dated on or before November 14, 2008, please do not cash the check, as it may bounce. Please look for updated postings on the Canon U.S.A. website on or about November 18, 2008 for further instruction on how to exchange your check for a new check that you will be able to cash.
* If you have not yet mailed in your rebate claim materials, please hold such materials until you receive further instruction. We are making new processing arrangements, with a new mail in address. Please look for updated postings on the Canon U.S.A. website on or about November 18, 2008 for further instruction on where to mail your rebate claim material and how to exchange your check for a new check that you will be able to cash.

Check our web site early next week for further instructions and contact information for any questions you may have. Again, please do not cash any rebate checks for printer or video products which are dated on or before November 14, 2008, as they may bounce.

We are committed to ensuring that you receive your refund as soon as possible and that you will continue to have full confidence in Canon U.S.A., Inc.

We apologize again for any inconvenience.

Sincerely, Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Logitech

QUOTE
Greetings Everyone: Thank you for sharing your concerns with us, and thank you for coming to the source to get an answer. We apologize for not being able to post sooner.

Recently, Logitech learned that one of our business partners for issuing mail-in rebate checks in the United States has encountered financial difficulties. The good news is that this partner is working closely with Logitech to minimize any inconvenience to our customers and community members who have applied for a mail-in rebate. We should have more information in the next couple of days, on our official website, and I will be sure to post you all regularly on the forums as well.

Here is some preliminary information:
If you have a check in hand sent to you on behalf of Logitech, we recommend that you refrain from depositing it until we can post specific guidance on our forums as well as on the support section of our Web site. This might take a couple of days. But waiting will help you avoid an insufficient funds charge against your bank account.
If you are waiting for a check, you will most likely receive it as planned. And Logitech plans to ensure that you receive your rebate. Again, we will have more specific information in the next couple of days.
We apologize for this inconvenience but we will work quickly to resolve any issues this presents to our customers and community members.

PriceGrabber.com wants to thank you for being a loyal customer, and also say thank you for participating in our review rebate program.

We wanted to give you an update on a recent change in our rebate process that has occurred over the past few days. We have been informed that the vendor who supplies the rebates to PriceGrabber customers who have filled out a review on our site is unfortunately no longer able to process rebate requests from our customers. Although PriceGrabber has prepaid this vendor a substantial amount to more than adequately fund our review rebate program, they have informed us that they do not intend to honor checks they have previously issued to our customers.

If you are currently in possession of a rebate check issued on behalf of PriceGrabber.com, or if you receive a check of this kind within the next week, PLEASE DO NOT CASH IT. The vendor is placing stop-payments on these checks to prevent you from being penalized, but we still hope to prevent you this additional inconvenience. PriceGrabber is in the process of reissuing your rebate check directly from our own accounts. A new check to be mailed to you directly from PriceGrabber headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. No additional action will be required from you to initiate this process.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to participate in both of our programs. Your feedback is very valuable to us, and we want to ensure you receive your rebate as promised. Rest assured that PriceGrabber is also taking all appropriate actions to ensure this type of problem does not occur again.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at rebates@pricegrabber.com.

Again, thank you for your time and understanding.

Dear Valued Customer,

This is an official email from TRENDnet.

Please note that a mail-in-rebate check that was recently mailed to you by a 3rd party company, on behalf of TRENDnet, will BOUNCE if you try to cash this check. This issue came to our attention today and we are taking immediate action to ensure that you receive your mail-in-rebate refund.

Why will your mail-in-rebate check bounce?

Please note that a 3rd party rebate processing company (legally we cannot disclose the company name at this point) was contracted to issue you your mail-in-rebate check. This 3rd party company is experiencing financial difficulties and the funds provided to them, by TRENDnet, are no longer available. We apologize for any inconvenience, delay or confusion this may cause. We are doing everything in our power to rectify the situation immediately.

We are taking immediate corrective actions to change our mail-in-rebate provider to ensure that this never happens again. We are committed to ensure that you receive your refund in a timely manner and that you will have full confidence in TRENDnet running into the future.

How to get your mail-in-rebate:

Don't cash the mail-in-rebate check you have received (it will bounce)
If you have not yet received the check, remember not to cash it once you do get it in the mail
Make a photocopy of the check for your records
Mail the original check to TRENDnet headquarters along with a printout of this email.
Mail the check to: (for your reference: our headquarter address can be confirmed on our website at www.trendnet.com)
TRENDnet

Additional Questions:

Rest assured that we are doing everything in our power to correct this unfortunate occurrence immediately.

We apologize again for any inconvenience.

Looks like as long as it's a rebate from a reputable retailer/manufacturer, you'll get paid eventually.

Just might take some time for the retailer/manufacturer to figure out who is paying what.

Reminds me of the whole cendyne thing a few years back where the retailers ended up paying out the remaining portion of the rebate. In cpg's case, it looks like manufacturers will be the one's that have to pay up since they created the rebate promotion.

I recently sent in for a Fujitsu rebate. I contacted them by e-mail and received a response within 10 minutes. They requested copies of the rebate documents along with a picture of the back of the product and stated they will take care of it.

Update from Canon

QUOTE
Updated as of November 21, 2008.

Dear Valued Customer,

This is an official message from Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The third-party rebate processing company, Continental Promotion Group (CPG), that was responsible for processing rebate claims and issuing mail-in rebate checks for Canon-brand printer and video products (along with many other products from a number of other companies) filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition on Friday, November 14. The funds provided to them by Canon U.S.A., Inc. (and other companies) are no longer available to satisfy the rebate checks that CPG issued on behalf of Canon and other companies.

Canon has made arrangements for such checks to be honored despite CPG's bankruptcy. Accordingly, if you have not yet presented such check to your bank for payment, please feel free to do so now.

Notwithstanding Canon's efforts in making arrangements to have rebate checks honored, as of the close of business on November 20, we received information that a small percentage of the outstanding rebate checks that were issued by CPG and dated on or before November 14, 2008 were returned unpaid. Canon has identified the affected customers and is in the process of sending replacement checks. Please allow approximately ten (10) business days for processing replacement checks. Canon will also reimburse those affected customers their returned check charge (see below for instructions). We apologize for any inconvenience, delay or confusion this situation with CPG has caused.

Accordingly, we request that you take the following actions:

* If you are holding or receive a rebate check for printer or video products which is dated on or before November 14, 2008, and such check has not previously been returned unpaid, please present that check to your bank for payment.
* If you have not yet mailed in your rebate claim materials, please note that Canon has made processing arrangements with a new mail-in address. Please direct those materials to the following address instead of the address referenced in the rebate materials:

Canon USA Rebates
P.O. Box 342140
Bartlett, TN 38184

* If your rebate check was returned unpaid as noted above, we are processing replacement checks now which will be mailed to you and you should receive in approximately ten (10) business days. Once such replacement check is deposited, please destroy your returned rebate check, which will not be honored. In the event your bank has charged you a returned check fee on the original rebate check which was returned unpaid, please submit the letter from the bank advising of such charge or, if unavailable, such other evidence as you may obtain that reasonably supports your return check charge to:

Canon Recovery
P.O. Box 343150
Bartlett, TN 38184

Please black out or otherwise delete any sensitive information, including your account number and statement balance from the documents you submit to support your request for reimbursement of a return check fee. Canon will promptly process these charges and reimburse affected individuals.

We are committed to ensuring that you receive your rebate as soon as possible and that you will continue to have full confidence in Canon U.S.A., Inc.

We apologize again for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Canon U.S.A., Inc.

I didn't wait for Antec, I went straight to Frys/Outpost where I bought the items. They have a special department set up that will mail you the rebates for any product bought from them that had a rebate that went through rebatestatus. They had me fax in (or I could have emailed them) copies of my submissions and said they would send out checks within 30 days for all.

A little bit of new info and still a bleak outlook. I like Gail Hillebrand of Consumers Union attitude that the seller should be responsible for the rebate.

QUOTE
'Rebate hassles' could take on new meaning

You've probably encountered the hassles of rebates: You wait months to get your money, or your rebate request is denied because you didn't follow the complicated rebate instructions to the letter. Or maybe you're among the large number of shoppers who don't bother to send them in.

Here's a new wrinkle in the rebate process: A company that processes rebates for several hundred companies has filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11.

Some of the clients of Continental Promotion Group Inc. are trying to make sure that rebate checks issued on their behalf are good, The Arizona Republic reported.

Clients include AT&T, Barnes and Noble, Bed Bath and Beyond, Costco, the Home Depot, Honeywell, Macy's Inc., Motorola and Toshiba, the article said.

An attorney working with CPG said the company would continue to process rebates and that they won't be rubber checks.

An article at Promo said CPG planned to borrow money from client companies to cover rebate checks.

"We are working with our clients to the extent possible to assist with the honoring of consumer rebate checks outstanding prior to the bankruptcy filing or providing alternate direction to consumers," the company said in a statement.

Some clients are taking precautions. For instance, the Arizona Republic story said Costco moved its rebate business to another company and will cover rebate checks issued by CPG and any bounced-check fees customers may incur.

If you're concerned about the status of your rebate, contact the manufacturer or the store where you purchased the item.

"You never contracted with the rebate company. You contracted with the manufacturer and the manufacturer owes you money," Gail Hillebrand of Consumers Union told CBS4.com, which added this good news: Some companies like Best Buy are doing away with mail-in rebates and will issue them when the customer pays in the checkout line.

Are Logitech rebates still handled by CPG? I just bought a EX110 from Radio Shack today and on the rebate receipt that printed out, it said to check status of the rebate on logitech.rebatestatus.com.

The rebate form isn't going to Phoenix, AZ. It says to mail it to El Paso, TX. The rebate form on the Radio Shack website says to check status at logitech-rebates.com.

Hmmm... I just took another look at the rebate receipt I got. The bottom terms & conditions say to check logitech-rebates.com for status. I think they just forgot to remove that little bit of info about checking on rebatestatus.com.

Looks like Logitech is with Parago for rebates now.

EDIT: So, is that a good thing or a bad thing? I've never done a Parago rebate before. Are they good or not?

I received two checks today from PCTools. I couldn't find the entries in my spreadsheet for the submissions and then it hit me. I looked into last years sheet and found that both of these were rebates that were paid by Frys after the rebatestatus fiasco. The checks came from Coppell, TX (rebatesHQ?). So now I have been paid twice for these rebates.

Earlier this week I received two checks from Advance Auto Parts that had already been paid after a very long wait and 3 calls to complain. They also had problems with their previous rebate house.
