Hi! My name is Mike B. I would like to thank you for writing and making us aware of your concern. It is always a great pleasure to assist you regarding any issues you may have.

I understand you have concerns on how to back up e-mail on AOL.

E-mail stored on member's online mailbox does not need to be backed up because these e-mail are stored online.

E-mail stored on member's Filing Cabinet should be backed up, because these e-mail are stored in the member's computer.

The information below will help you in the process:

If you uninstall the AOL software, you will remove all AOL files. This includes any personal files you have created and saved within the AOL software folder.

NOTE: Uninstalling the AOL software has no effect on your
BUDDY LIST, STOCK PORTFOLIO, or UNREAD E-MAIL.

I recommend you save or backup the following folders before uninstalling the AOL software:

- C:\America Online 5.0\Organize
The ORGANIZE folder contains a list of your AOL screen
names as well as the Personal Filing Cabinets (PFCs) and
Favorite Places for each screen name. Additionally, the
Address Book for each screen name is also stored within this
  folder.

- C:\America Online 5.0\Download
By default, the AOL software will store any files you have
  downloaded in the Download folder.

NOTE: Files may be downloaded to any directory you specify.
If you have directed the AOL software to store
downloaded files to a directory other than
C:\America Online 5.0\Download, it is recommended
you save the other directory as well.

TO SAVE YOUR AOL FILES TO A NEWLY CREATED FOLDER ON YOUR WINDOWS DESKTOP: 1. Create a new folder on your windows Desktop and give it a
    name.
      a. Right-click on your Windows Desktop and select NEW,
          then FOLDER.
      b. Type the name of your new folder (AOL FILES for
instance) and press the ENTER key on your keyboard.

2. Locate the AOL 5.0 Organize folder.
      a. Click on START, select FIND, then FILES OR FOLDERS.
      b. In the NAMED field, type: ORGANIZE and click on FIND
          NOW.

NOTE: If a match is not found, ensure the LOOK IN field
lists the drive containing your America Online
software, and the INCLUDE SUBFOLDERS checkbox
                is checked.

      c. In the results window, right-click on the ORGANIZE
          folder and select COPY.
      d. Right-click on the newly created folder on your
          Windows Desktop and select PASTE.

3. Repeat steps a) through c) above to locate and copy the
DOWNLOAD folder or any file or folder you would like to
save from the America Online 5.0 folder.

NOTE: During the file copy, a COPYING window may appear on
your screen, indicating the file or folder is being
copied, along with a progress indicator.

TO SAVE YOUR AOL FILES TO A FLOPPY DISK:
It is unlikely an AOL 5.0 file will fit onto a standard floppy disk. Unless you have some form of compressed or mass storage media such as a tape backup system or writable CD-ROM, I recommend you use the instructions listed above in order to save AOL files.

AOL Keywords are the ultimate shortcut to find what you want fast on AOL!  Choose the AOL Keyword box at the top of your screen (to the left of the URL window). Go to Keyword: Computer Check-up. This keyword will automatically scan your computer, then give you options on how you can improve performance and fix many technical issues you may have.
