With the price of gas constantly rising, does anybody have any gas saving tips? Also, are gas credit cards beneficial at all because I'm thinking about getting either a gas credit card or a rewards card, but I don't which ones better.

cron
For the credit cards, it really depends on how you fill up on gas in your household.

Gas Station Branded Credit cards:

Store branded gas credit cards like the bp card are pretty handy if you go to one particular brand of station regularily. One big benefit for these type of cards, they usually have no limits on the amount of rewards you can get per year (check carefully).

So, if you go to one brand of station often, that can be pretty useful. They usually pay 1% for everything else which is the negative part. You basically have limited choice.

Flexible Gas Rewards Cards:

I personally have a habit of going to a few different gas stations, so having a more flexible rewards card like the Associated Bank or the Discover Gas/Auto card are pretty handy for me.

It's more flexible, but they have a tendency to set limits on the amount of rewards you can get per year.

See TheDiggler's post below for another flexible gas card.

Other gas saving tips:

Keep your tires properly inflated.
Clean air filter
Proper Alignment
For every 5 mph you reduce highway speed, you can reduce fuel consumption by 7%.

Make sure to keep on top of maintenance overall.
Having a tune-up might help, if your car is due for one. Bad or old spark plugs probably reduce mpg.
Warshed
Buy a scooter or bicycle. I started riding my bike to work until I got a flat tire.

For gas/credit cards, I'm partial to the PenFed Visa Platinum Rewards card -- 5% back on gas purchases paid at the pump, where the cash back posts directly to your statement each month when the statement closes.

There's no annual fee for the card, but you do need to be a PenFed member. If you're not one already, and if you're not affiliated w/ a brach of the govt. / military entitled to join for free, you can sign up for the NMFA for $20 and then be eligible. You only need to join NMFA for the first year. Once you're a PenFed member, you're in. wink.gif

Check your local grocery store. Some groceries chains have gas stations. They offer gas promotions, typically 10˘ off per gallon for evey $100 you buy. Sometimes, they offer bonus promotions for purchasing certain items. Occasionally they offer bonus promotions for every $XX dollars you spend in a given week.

For instance this week at Tops they have a bonus promo where you get extra points WYB eight (8) participating products. Originally I had figured out to get a free 30 gallons of gas (value $126 here), you'd need to spend $77. So far I have spent $42 and I have 3100 point. This equals $3.10 off a gallon of gas, 30 gallons maximum ($93 value). And, I have tons of food I purchased to get it. The gas promos vary from store to store, but if you know how to take advantage of it (I save my free coupons and use them during the promotion. I get full value for these free products. On double coupons, the double value is deducted from my total, but I get credit for the single value) you can really reap the rewards.

Gas at costco is about 30c/gallon cheaper than anywhere else in town. If you don't have a membership yet, I bought the annual membership because it would pay for itself in gas savings alone! Then I can get in on these Costco B&M deals wink.gif

We don't have a costco here, but BJs is running 2-3 CENTS cheaper per gallon.

There are some who claim hyper-milage, except a few of their tricks are plain dangerous. Race car drivers do draft behind another vehicle; but it ain't a good idea to ride the back of a semi. Tires are engineered to run at a certain PSI; but rock hard rubber provide little contact to the road. Coasting in neutral to a stop or turning off your engine might be good if no other vehicles are around, except you should always retain the ability to avoid danger.

Back a decade or so, I read that over half of CA car emission was cause by short drives, especially on Saturday. Your best milage is after your engine reaches lamba or closed loop drivability. Plan your trips and avoid traffic jams should results in better milage.

Our Costco is usually only 1-2˘ cheaper. So YMMV.

However, the Costco AMEX card is now giving back 3% on all gas purchases, while the Business card gives 5%.

I was able to get approved for the Business card without having a business; just used my name. The savings are huge.
It's great because you also get 5% at all Gas stations, not just Costco ones. (Although they exclude any of the grocery store or warehouse (except Costco of course) stations)

Interesting that it is YMMV...I thought it was a competitive pricing thing that Costco did. Doubt things changed much over the weekend, but gas at the Shell down the block from Costco was $4.559/gal while at Costco, it was $4.259/gal.

Brothel offers customers gas rebate

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Nevada brothel is trying to stimulate business by offering free gasoline.

Clients of the Shady Lady Ranch will get a $50 gas voucher if they fork out $300 -- worth about one hour's worth of services -- at the brothel in Beatty, Nevada, 130 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Owner James Davis said he already has had to order another $1,000 set of gas vouchers because the first $1,000 were spent in one week.

"It's rocking along. We're doing quite well. June and July historically are not big months," said Davis, who is co-owner of the brothel along with his wife Bobbi, in a telephone interview.

The $50 rebate would roughly cover the cost of a round trip drive from Las Vegas to the ranch.

Davis said business at the ranch, which has been operating for 16 years, generally slows in the early summer. He said the brothel regularly offers specials to lure clients and his wife came up with the gas vouchers for this month.

U.S. gasoline prices hit a record $4.08 a gallon last week, up 38 percent from a year ago.

Brothels, illegal in most U.S. states, are legal in parts of Nevada.

Gas prices on military bases is also YMMV. Some places it's just 2˘ cheaper and some are up to 10˘ cheaper.

Pierce County Group Offers Free Gas For Crime Tips
(Tacoma, WA) -- Hoping to generate new tips on their county's 50-most-wanted, Pierce County Crimestoppers in Washington state is offering 250-dollar free gasoline cards for tips that lead to arrests and convictions.
This is in addition to the one-thousand-dollar reward that Pierce County Crimestoppers was already offering.
Two gasoline customers told Channel Five News 1/81/8 KING 3/83/8 this morning they consider the cards a great idea.
They said people can use any help they can get on gasoline right now.

My Tops gas points total is over 4,000. Gas is selling at $4.25 a gallon, so I asked what would happen if I had more than 4,250 points when I filled up. After a call to accounting, the answer is I would lose them! I can start again after I use my current balance, but all that I have gets used on one fill be it 300 points or 6,000.

Dominick's Offering 10 Cents Off Gallon of Gas With Store Card
By Mike Hughlett | Tribune staff reporter
3:58 PM CDT, October 22, 2008

A Safeway Inc. program that gives customers gasoline credits for grocery purchases has come to the Chicago area this week. California-based Safeway, parent company of Dominick's, is offering the program through about 300 area BP gas stations and six fuel stations directly affiliated with Dominick's supermarkets.

Through the "PowerPump" program, customers with Dominick's "Fresh Values" cards can get 10-cents per gallon off on gas at Dominick's own stations for every $100 in purchases at Dominick's grocery stores. For gas bought at BP, they earn a $1.50 credit for every $100 in purchases at Dominick's. Safeway first rolled out the program in July in five other states.

No it wasn't at 20 feet, it was at 10 or less. This really wasn't a good myth for them to check out as many young drivers from the 70s (and the Mid-West) could have confirmed that it was no myth and they didn't even do it right. You only get a minimal gain from trailing while in gear. To get the most benefit from drafting you have to 1. Most Importantly - be in radio contact with the truck so he knows what you are doing, and, 2. Get close enough that you can take your car out of gear so you are being sucked along while the car is at idle in neutral. It also has to be on a mostly straight, flat road otherwise you end up having to shift in and out of gear to maintain position and that will eat up your fuel economy savings.

Route 55 from Chicago to Bloomington-Normal (Illinois State University) used to be a perfect road for drafting and is where I learned and practiced it. My brother had a 1975 VW Rabbit that would draft the best. My 1976 Capri did well too but at a closer distance than the Rabbit.

Also they should have experimented with semi trucks. You see them drafting in gear all the time when traveling in a mutiple truck convoy. I'm told it can make a huge difference in fuel economy for the trucks in the rear. But law enforcement frowns on drafting, obviously, as you have to maintain a less-than-safe stopping distance between you and the rear of the truck in front of you. And because you have to maintain a high degree of alertness while drafting it can really wear you out mentally and physically.

really? I remember when they tried it at real close proximity he lost MPG cause he was constantly accelerating and decellerating - while in the others he was able to maintain a more constant speed.

being sucked in while in neutral doesn't seem like it would be strong enough to actually carry the car - especially if only a 40% gain was achieved while in gear -
WingsOverVA
From the show results:
QUOTE
Freightliner lent the MythBusters one of their new Cascadia big rigs, which they are billing as the most aerodynamic big rig on the market.

Mike Ryan, Hollywood stunt driver, was there to educate Grant on the ins and outs of drafting. Also on-hand was Andrew Smith, test engineer, who helped them hook up a computer to the fuel injection system to accurately measure the fuel consumption.

•55mph control: 32mpg
•100ft: 35.5mpg, 11% improvement
•50ft: 38.5mpg, 20%
•20ft: 40.5mpg, 27%
•10ft: 44.5mpg, 39%
•2ft: 41mpg, 29%
The fuel economy actually dropped at 2ft. Andrew Smith's theory was that at 2ft, Grant got nervous with the throttle as it was difficult to maintain that 2ft gap.

This backs up what I said, throttle variations will eat up any economy gains.

Another big factor is the shape and size of the car. The rabbit was almost the perfect shape as you could just drive it up and feel the pull take over. The Capri had to be finessed into the sweet spot. An old style VW Bug I never could get to the right spot, same with a triumph GT6. I think the GT6 was just too low and the bug just the wrong shape.

Drafting out of gear is not so much the sucking of the truck as it is the aerodynamics of being drawn from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure, the greater the difference the higher the draw. Much like a jet turbine engine. Unlike a rocket engine that derives all of it's thrust from the rocket's exhaust, a jet gets much of it's thrust from the low pressure zone created in front of the engine that draws it forward. This was always a point of contention between flight students and jet rated instructors before the Harrier jump jet came on the scene.

This is also backed up by the results from the Mythbusters/NASA tests:
QUOTE
NASA let them do a small scale test to study the aerodynamics of a big rig. They captured video of smoke travelling over a minature big rig and verified that there is a low pressure area behind. They then stuck a minature car to a force gauge to study the difference with and without drafting.

•7 car lengths: 21% drag reduction
•10ft: 60%
•6ft: 80%
•2ft: 93%

This is also why it works best on a flat, straight surface, when you start adding arcs either horizontally or vertically the pressure vectors spread out to the point of diluting the needed differential to maintain the speed of the drafting vehicle.
WingsOverVA
Another test they did backed up the out of gear draft as well, it was Tory on the bicycle. If he had a larger area to be "pushed" ahead of the high pressure area he could have coasted without any pedaling.
QUOTE
Bonus myth: Drafting with a bicycle

They setup Tory with a heart rate monitor and had him peddle twice down the road at 20mph. The first time by himself, the second time he got to draft the big rig. Tory was able to coast behind the big rig, barely pedaling, whereas his heart rate averaged 166 without the help of a draft.
