I don't think they have it on their website. I had to call them and request it. They actually "upgraded" my existing BoA credit card to the Gold Rewards at my request.

I would do a bit of research to get more details, but I'm just too busy at the moment. If noone else can turn up some details I'll see what I can do.

One very important message I found today is that if you apply AMEX blue cash through the link of Ebates, you will have $15 bonus from Ebates.
doctor_ido
How does it work carloscai? I just asked for an application to the new amex blue cash back rewards card. I think this is the one I am going to use from now on.
carloscai
Go to ebates.com, if you already have an account, log in. Click on the banner called "more cash", it will take you to a page with many credit card options (still in the ebates.com web site). Use their link to apply for that AMEX blue cash. 2 weeks after you got your new card, you will see $15 in your ebates account.

Actually, there are many online agencies that can provide you a link to apply credit cards. Many of them will give you some bonus once your application got approved. One example is the link on MSN.com's home page, it gives you a DVD player.

However, I seldom trust these agencies, since you have to go through their links to provide your personal information such as social security number. But I believe since many of us have an ebates account, it does not hurt to just let them know a bit more about you.

I applied my AMEX blue cash several months ago. At that time I had no idea that I can earn this $15...bang.gif I finished my application by calling AMEX directly.

Since this was bumped...

I've contemplated the Amex Blue a few times, but never bit the bullet. I'm concerned that the places I use a credit card at won't take Amex. Much like most people, I use it for gas, the grocery, online purchases, restaraunts, etc.

Has anyone had problems with certain places taking Visa, but not Amex?

I would say it's pretty rare that I find places don't take Amex. Nearly all online retailers do, along with gas & grocery stores. All major chain & mall stores tend to take Amex (Gap, Banana Republic, J Crew, Pottery Barn, etc.), as do all the major appliance/electronic stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc). There have been only a couple times I couldn't use Amex. One was at Kaufmann's (owned by Mayco, the dept store conglomerate). Other times (the few of them) have always been at small, local stores that choose not to take Amex because of their higher fees.

So I keep a VISA & MC around as well (I use the Amazon VISA since I order from them often and the Citibank Dividend MC for the virtual account # feature), but I use my Amex rewards card about 95% of the time.
doctor_ido
For the US dewolfxy is right you probably need a visa but if you ever go out of the US many times they will only accept amex. Probably best to keep a visa and amex.

I just got the citi divident platinum cash back card, is this the one with virtual account numbers?

This is a great thread. I have had a Bank one card for 8 years now and just added the cash back program to the card after I saw this thread.

Doesn't anyone use PayPal anymore? They have both virtual credit cards and a debit card with 1.5% cash back. No restrictions and it's real cash back, given instantly at the time of purchase.

Lot's of downsides to this

1) Must keep money in PayPal account in order to use the Debit card
2) Debit cards don't have the same protection as credit cards
3) No grace period compared to credit card.

If you want instant or near instant rewards payout then I'd go with the Chase PerfectCard. Earned 1% rewards are paid monthly.

Nice post, mephisto!

Here's a question. What's the best card to own with the best perks?

Thx.
dewolfxy
Ditto on the compliments to mephisto. That's a good summary of the issues with Paypal Debit cards.

aiwp8 - I recommend the Amex Blue Cash card. If you spend > $11,000 per year on it, you'll beat a standard 1% card. People used to like the Principal Bank Platinum VISA a lot, but they've recently changed their terms.
carloscai
I received emails and letters from AMEX about policy changes, too long, have not yet finished reading...tongue.gif

Hope it's not about their cash back policy.

One HUGE drawback with Paypal: You've got 30 days from the TRANSACTION date to decide if you're happy with the product. After that, you own it. With a Visa (and most other credit cards) you can go back to a transaction 2 years ago and dispute it.

I have had personal experience with this problem with Paypal. I ordered product from a company. He said I should have the product in 3-4 weeks. 2 months goes by and more promises and apologies for delays. 6 months goes by and I ask for my money back. He negotiates to give me a partial credit and will have the product in my hands within 3 weeks. 3 weeks later, I don't hear anything and don't get any responses from phone calls, email, etc. I contact Paypal to refuse the transaction and they say "sorry pal".

Turns out this guy went out of business, left a number of people hanging without product and thier money gone.

I don't use Paypal anymore. It's way too easy to just pick up the phone and say "Visa, I'd like to refuse this transaction." And they say "certainly sir. We will credit your account."

I thought VISA/MC disputes were 60 days - are you sure about that 2 years thing? I suppose in your situation, you could say they charged you when you ordered it and it never shipped and then VISA/MC would let you dispute, but in normal circumstances where you buy an item and it charges when it ships, I thought you only had 60 days from the date of the charge (or was it 90 days?).

But in general, I agree with your criticism of paypal. Lots of potential for problems with them.

I thought VISA/MC disputes were 60 days - are you sure about that 2 years thing?

Maybe it depends on your level of service with the provider, but I've disputed things 6-9 months after a few times, and one that was 2 years. The 2 year one they said "well, we usually don't go back that far, but ok."

I know my credit is really good, so maybe that makes a difference. Whenever I have a CSR that gives me any crap (Visa, bank, elsewhere), I say "look at my account, look at my payment history, look how long I've been with you. Do you want me to look elsewhere?" A slight pause, and then "Ok, sir, let me see what I can do."

But yes, I've have disputed stuff that's months old. It usually takes that long from the order, to getting your bill, paying it, receiving your product, using the product for a period of time, and then deciding it's not going to work out. Depending on the vendor, you''l throw the "30-day policy" at you, then I just refuse it through Visa.

(As a side note on my previous story, I used a old Visa for the purchase that I was getting miles on. I cashed in my miles and canceled the card. That was JUST after I made this purchase. 9 months later when this was a full on dispute, there wasn't anything I could do.)

Hi everyone.

I've been reading this topic with some interest. I need to check out of my current CC (no more cash reward) and secure another.

I'd like to suggest some additional card characteristics for the thread:
  • Extended warranty protection?
  • Bill payment - I just noticed that one of my credit cards offers electronic bill payment through CheckFree.com. Also, this credit card doesn't charge for the service, or charge transaction fees for paying bills with your credit card (you can also pay by checking account, if you wish). This is interesting. The card doesn't pay rewards, so it's not a candidate for discussion here, but I wonder if other reward cards would have similar bill payment terms? It would be a good way to rack up reward $.
Also, I was browsing around at fw, and it seems like the Principal Bank card isn't providing much value these days (I think someone mentioned this above) - might want to stay away from this one.

And, there's a new gas CC from Discover that evidently pays 5% back.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm currently a bit busy, but I'll try to add some of those additional features to the OP thread when I next have a moment. Yes, the Principal bank card is less popular now that it's changed its terms. There are 5% deals that Discover and CitiBank have offered recently, I'll try to add those to the OP soon.
mephisto
I think it just depends on your spending whether Principal Bank card is still worth it. I have it and it's now an even better deal for me. Before I got 1.25% and now I'll net 1.4375% because I'll max out the 40k before the year is over. I've already charged 26.5k in the last 4 months and am now in the sweet 2% tier for the last 13.5k. At this rate I'll have to look for another card soon smile.gif

I checked a little more into this bill payment thing. It's an MBNA card, and it's through their NetAccess payment site. I called MBNA, and they have a simple 1% rewards card called the MBNA America Bank Platinum Plus MasterCard w/ cash something (name's long enough, isn't it?). They didn't know too much about the bill payment thing.

Here's some selected info from the bill payment service (it's called "Bill Pay Choice").

Paying bills with Your Credit Card
Bill Pay Choice simplifies your life by allowing you to pay bills with a Net Access- registered credit card.

Here's what is in it for you:
  • Consolidate bills onto one credit card statement for record keeping
  • Reduce check book entries
  • Hold on to your cash for a few more weeks
  • Earn points with selected merchants if you have a rewards card
Great News! All payments funded by your credit card account have no transaction fee!!! And they enjoy the same grace period (if any) that you currently have on purchases.

I think three of my utilities (gas, electric, telephone) are compatible with this. If the 1% card above was good for this, it would at least be good enough for paying these...
dewolfxy
Just so you know, most utilities accept ANY credit card for automatic bill payment directly. My phone company (Verizon), cable (Comcast) and electric all accept credit cards. And, you can earn rewards on your card by doing that while paying fewer bills each month.

Basically it's the same as the NetAccess thing you're describing. NetAccess sounds interesting, but I wanted to point out you can do that with almost any card as long as your utility company supports it. The main benefit of NetAccess seems that it's a comprehensive bill payment site at one location, whereas when you deal with the utility directly you have to handle it separately for each utility.
dealsbrokeme
Please update it with known rewards limits.
For example, Citibank Dividend card has a limit of $300/yr, whereas Chase Freedom card has no limit.

Again, to go over $300/yr dividend, u need to spend $30K, which is moot.

But last year, when we were buying the I-Bonds, that would have played a role.

I didn't know that a lot of utilities would do automatic bill payment by credit card. I know that most of them supported it by checking account. I used to do this, but I shut it down because I wanted more control over what they would get paid.

I just received a phone call from MBNA. They were offering me the platinum cash-rebate card with 6.99% APR. However, for the cash rebate function, it's actually like this:

Spend $5000, get back $40.
Spend $7500, get back $60.
Spend $25,000, get back $250.

SO the actually rebate rate is somewhere below 1%.
carloscai
The best cash rebate card now I can find is actually the chase double platinum mastercard. It gives you 1% cash rebate or 2 reward points for every dollar you spend. And, the money is credited to your account every month.
No annual fee.

I use the Chase Freedom Card which give 5% on gasoline and 1% on purchases at the next statement. i.e. this month I have accumulated 8.24$ this will be credited to my account the next statement if I have gasoline purchases. No restrictions on the Gas stations. though gas stations attached with say meijer or kroger do not earn rebate since they are classified in their systems as grocery stores.

OP is now updated. I've removed defunct cards and added several new ones. All the cards are updated with info on the reward caps, if I could find it. For a couple of cards I noted I couldn't find the info

There was a request for added info about other features of the cards - e.g., warranty protection, etc. I didn't add that because it would take a long time to look up and there are lots of perks for each card. I also don't want to clutter up the info for each card, since this thread is mainly about cash rewards. I'm afraid you'll have to look that up yourselves by following the links I've given to the card. If you like, post to the thread and let others know what you've found. In general, I find that AMEX cards have some of the best warranty protection/purchase protection features.

Please continue to post with additional info if you have any. Several people mentioned a Chase "Freedom Card". I'm only able to find the Chase "Perfect Card". I believe those are the same, but if you know otherwise let me know.

I guess it's like the AMEX membership award, you can exchange points for some free merchandise. The CSR on the phone told me you can convert points into cash rewards. Probably 2 to 1, I say.

EDIT:
This is what it says:
QUOTE
Double Platinum rewards
Earn rewards for every dollar you spend with your Chase Double Platinum MasterCard. And then when you are ready to redeem, you can decide which reward you like best:
1%cash back that will show upp pas a crdit on your statement
or
Redeem your points for free merchandise, gift certificates and travel rewards.

Don't forget, you can choose both. Use some of your points for a cash back statement credit and the rest on merchandise selections. It's that simple.

Carlos - sorry I didn't put it in, but I can't find it on the Chase website. Can you point me to a site where I can get info about it? It may be a limited offer, National City for instance has an "everyday spend" rewards card that has some good terms but is only available by direct mail offer. They won't give it to you if you just call, only if they sent you an offer. Perhaps this Chase card is the same? All I found on their website is the Chase Platinum, nothing about "Double Platinum".

I have no clue where to find it on their site, but I've been calling Chase about the application I just entered (related to the balance transfers I made - they have a transfer balance fee bang.gif), and I've been told quite a few times that I qualified for the "Double Platinum" card and the application I sent in was for the "Platinum" card noclue.gif. BTW, I was only able to get $45 of my transfer balance fee "waived" of the $60 balance transfer fee as I made TWO transfers (blithely not knowing that there's a fee involved).... Anyone know if it's possible to get the full amount back as I didn't really NEED to transfer the money (I just thought, hey, 0% interest for a year, Great!).
