So I got a new quad-core acer. It's up an running, but I've noticed something REALLY annoying. I use a ps2 mouse and keyboard running through an older 4 port KVM. Works great on other computers, but on this one, I get double-presses on keys (ie as I type, letters sometimes show up twice), or it stickies the ctrl/alt/shift kets (ie it THINKS I've got one or more of those held when I don't). Also, the mouse jumps erratically.

If I switch over to another computer, they work fine. I've also tried swapping cables/ports on the KVM - it's definitely the new computer. Any idea why? Any solution other than either use a USB keyboard/mouse on it and/or get a new KVM?

For now, I've hooked up a basic USB set and they're fine. I don't NEED the kvm at the moment, but it's sure handy when I have a computer that needs worked on.

You could consider a remote desktop software solution, like VNC, NX, or Windows Remote Desktop.

For machines that have their own displays, but where I'd like to share a mouse & keyboard, I love Synergy. smile.gif

I use RD a lot - got 2 machines that I ONLY access via that, and another 1 or 2 that I use it often. The KVM though is needed for things like installing windows - can't run RD till XP is installed wink.gif

Does this still have Vista or did you install XP?
Is the KVM switch connected to a front USB port? If so try connecting to one of the rear ports.
Try looking on the manufacturers website for any knowledgebase articles concerning this issue.

do you still have problems when you connect the keyboard/mouse directly to the computer?

Running XP, not vista. The KVM is PS2, not USB. I had to switch to a USB keyboard/mouse to make it work right. I haven't tried hooking the PS2 devices directly yet.

And the KVM is an old generic thing - not sure there IS a mfg website wink.gif
