It is an interface to Google Maps. Their longterm plan is to meld together so that when you ask Google Maps for directions, it will also show a link for take the trip by transit. It will also show the transit fare and will compare that to the driving cost using IRS mileage rates. We were told it is no longer a lab project but is graduating into a full fledged supported project.
Not tied in with the local public transit, Metro, system. Does take in account part of Highway 40 (I-64) is completely closed down and re-route your trip. However, directions given to my father's house failed to consider the effects of the highway project.

Only tied in with those systems as shown on this page.Transit systems must supply feeds in a format that Google supports for you to be able to get transit information from this service. Google is courting transit agengies, but for many there is a cost to get the data in their format and then it has to be maintained.
