Its a question. How can I charge up my credit card? Apparently, I got a citi credit card. Not exactually sure of the deal, can't recall. But I have to spend $500 in the next 2 months to get something back...I think $100. But the card has $75 annual fee that is charged up front! I have no idea why I got the card.

But I have it. So, how can I rack up $500? Holiday shopping already done and I don't spend too much on necessities.

Could I purchase store gift cards?
Warshed
Thats what I did. I bought gift cards for stuff you always buy, like groceries, or gas.
qwex
I would probably use it for any incidental purchases - groceries, convenience store, gas, and of course gift cards. you could always buy GCs to places you know you're going to shop in the future anyway, so you don't feel like you're forcing yourself to buy stuff you don't want.

which card is it if you don't mind me asking? $75 up-front annual fee to get only $100 back isn't much of an offer by citi.

Asimo knows he screwed up.

I heard some gentlemen clubs take credit cards. A little pleasure from over priced drinks or a lap dance would go a short way. wink.gif

I screwed up big time. I can't believe I got this card. I would never get a annual fee card unless it was worth it. $100 is not worth it. The reward must be higher, but I can't seem to recall the details.

I got the citi premier pass eleite level mastercard. Anyone know the details of a recent promo?
Nack
Well, if you have a favorite restaurant or restaurant chain, a lot of them are offering a free $10 or $20 gift card for each $100 of gift cards purchased.

The two I can think of (I know I have seen others, just can't remember where):

Sonny's (ok barbecue), buy $100, get $10 free (may be central FL only - so double-check).

Denny's, buy $100, get $20 free (I believe this one is chain-wide).

Hehe, you could buy $500 in Denny's gift cards, and get $600 in Denny's gift cards. You will end up with $200 free, $100 in cash, and $100 in gift cards. Of course, that's a lot of bacon and eggs. tongue.gif
kas
Most of Denny's are franchises and this is the first I heard of the $20 bonus for the $100 GC. If it's straight up, bring the kids to a Denny's on Tuesday and feed 'em free, if you order a meal.

Tonight I past an Arby and saw that one gets a "free" combo meal with a purchase of a $20 GC.

I've gone as far as paying bills (like high speed internet and cell phone) ahead - like 2 or 3 months ahead. Of course W-M gift cards work great as well.

Good luck.

If you JUST got the card, as in the the annual fee has appeared on your CURRENT BILL, contact Citi to cancel the card. Most credit cards issuers will refund the annual fee if you call to cancel claiming you weren't aware of the fee (YMMV). Sometimes they'll even waive the fee and let you keep the card for that year (MUCH BIGGER YMMV).

use it to buy some gas.

Thanks dig. Called and they will credit me in couple cycles since the annual fee is already charged. Apparently this is a popular card for air travel. If ticket cost $250+, you get 2nd ticket for free. And there is no limit to how many times for redemption. But I don't do a lot of traveling.

The promo is $250 equivalent. Must purchase $500+ in first 2 months. Thanks others - will stock up on grocery and gas cards. So, wait couple months and see how it goes before I cancel.

Yep. I will get credit for the annual fee and after I make $500+ in gift cards, I qualify for $250.

Not sure if I can post, but info from another site

didn't mean to point out your mistake, more so a jab at citi. worst case you make $25 and end up with a bunch of GCs, but anyway it seems like with diggler's help you got an even better deal smile.gif

just goes to show, it's always worth calling customer service to see if they'll make you an offer!

That is seriously making me consider this. I could apply, then call and cry about the 75 dollar annual fee and then see if they take it off like you. If they do, great, if not, then I cancel the card. I would still be sitting pretty though with the 250$ they throw in after the 500 dollar purchase. These sweet deals I bet are going to be a thing of the past soon, with the whole credit crunch.

Checked my account online and saw the credit already. I hope I still qualify for the promo.

I did the 5 panera card with mc (not amex) for $30/ea (charged $25/ea) and the 5 amex for $25 gc. In the plus on these. Then I did couple local grocery stores. Let's see how long it takes.

This card is very interesting. If I traveled just a little more than I do now, I'd look into it more.

Buy a bunch of gift cards for $9.99 or less each. You can return them for cash, I believe, because of a new law placed in effect today.

I think that is a California State law - not applicable elsewhere.

The citi premier pass elite card you applied for comes with 20,000 thank you points after the first purchase, that's worth $200 in gift cards or you can use it to get some other rewards such as a plane ticket.
https://www.citicards.com/cards/wv/cardDeta...do?screenID=901
What I do would do is spend the required $500 as soon as you can by using the card to buy gas, groceries, pay your telephone & cable bill, your cellphone bill, or any other bill you can pay with a credit card without a convenience fee. You can even pay extra on these bills, like if your cell phone bill is $50 you can pay $200 and have a $150 credit that will get used up over the next 3 months. Off course don't do that if you plan on changing to a different carrier any time soon. So anyway by charging the max to your card and overpaying some of you regular bills, you can hopefully rack up $500 in charges in 1-2 months. I don't think the annual fee counts so you need $500 in actual charges. Once you reach that limit, citi will credit your account with 20,000 points on your next statement. Once that happens, call citi and tell them you want to switch to the citi regular premier pass card that does not have an annual fee. They will send you a new regular card replacement and refund the remainder of the $75 fee based on how long you have has the card, so if you call after 2 month, they will refund 75 * 10 / 12 for the remaining 10 months you have. When you get the new card use up the fee credit that will be on it then call to cancel it. At that point you might be offered a point or dollar credit (about 3,000 points or $25) for keeping your account open, take it, use it, then call again to cancel. Taking into account the extra credit you can make at the end, you will probably end up making $200 on this deal. not bad for about 1 hour worth of work.

New law in 2008 allows consumers to redeem gift cards for cash

On Jan. 1, consumers will be able to redeem gift cards for cash if the balance is less than $10, thanks to a new law sponsored by state Sen. Ellen Corbett, D-San Leandro.

Currently, gift cards worth less than five dollars can be subjected to dormancy fees and a store can refuse to give the remaining value back in cash no matter how small the value.

Richard Holober, Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of California, which is based in San Mateo, said, 'Consumers should be aware that any dormant gift cards they have worth less than $10 can be redeemed for cash starting Tuesday.'

Holober said, 'As long as the card was bought 1997 or later, you'll get your cash back. After all, the retail store or restaurant chain was already paid for the full value of the gift card.'

The new law, SB 250, makes California the most consumer-friendly state in the nation when it comes to gift card laws. Vermont allows cash back for up to $1, while Washington and Montana laws give money back up to $5.

Holober said businesses have profited mightily from millions of gift cards with small balances that are never redeemed.

He said that between 2005 and 2006, companies claimed millions of dollars in income from gift cards that remained unredeemed for two years after they were purchased included.

Holober said the claims include $43 million for Home Depot, $43 million for Best Buy, $30 million for Limited Brands, $8 million

for Nordstrom and more than $7 million for Michael's Stores.

He said the law will have a positive impact on millions of consumers because a recent 'Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll' showing nearly two-thirds of Americans (62 percent) planned to purchase gift cards this holiday season, second only to clothing among respondents (71 percent).

Holober said nationally, Americans are expected to spend $70 billion this year on gift cards alone, with billions of those dollars going unused.

He said the law doesn't apply to credit card gift cards or ones tied to multiple stores, such as mall gift cards, or gift cards issued as a part of a promotional package.
wtf
It's a bummer this isn't nationwide. I've got quite a few <$10 gcs that would be great to cashout.
