Can someone decrypt what the maximum # of HDs I can have is and how they would be connected. From reading the specification, I think the max would be:

2 IDE (Of course assuming I need a DVD+RW and a CDROM)
1 SATA
2 RAID

Specifically, this is what's confusing: "RAID function works w/ATA133+SATA H/D or 2 SATA H/D"

Correct? Or can it have two SATA? Or with sata can there be only 1 IDE? Or like Zoid says, you get to choose two HDs for either/or SATA/RAID? And does RAID work with basic IDE HDs found in IRD, or does that need some diff't type of hard drive (I know SATA is diff't)?

Thanks.

looks like you can have 6.

Four on the IDE
and then two on sata/raid

Yeah, you can have 4 IDE and 2 SATA. But, if you want DVD & CD drives then the total is 4 hard drives: 2 IDE and 2 SATA.

What this means is that you can setup a 2 drive RAID array using either 1 SATA and 1 ATA/133, or 2 SATA.

Yes.

The difference between SATA and IDE is:
1) The interface. SATA does not use the 40 or 80 wire ribbon cable you're used to seeing. It uses a smaller. thinner cable like this to attach to the motherboard.
2) Speed. SATA runs at ATA/150, where IDE runs at ATA/33/66/100/133.

thanks, as always!

that sucks. that means I'd have to have 250GB drives to reach my goal. oh, well I guess it'll 120, 120, 200, 200 = 640GB.

who can say "pci IDE controller or external drives"?

Well, PCI IDE controller may be a way to go.
External HD defeats the purpose, I don't want to brag "I have a terabyte," I want to brag, "I have a terabyte and I got it for under $300."

5 PCI Slots... hmmm
Well I need one for a modem (I'm old fashioned, but I want a modem just in case).
One for a TV tuner.
That leaves 3... assuming one left for what may come up, that'll give me two more HDs smile.gif

But SATA drives are expensive as of now, so in any case I don't think I'll amass a terabyte for at least another 2 years.

Yes, per GB they are more expensive than IDE, but you can use a converter to connect IDE drives to SATA. Search for Serial ATA Converter at your favorite reseller smile.gif They sell for $20 - $30.

That defeats the purpose... if a 120GB IDE HD is $53 after rebate after tax, paying 20+ for a converter tongue.gif
