So, I reset everything to use WinXP pro permissions (disabled simple file sharing).

Took me about 3 hours to figure out that to share something, I need to both allow it in permissions AND security. ?: how do I allow folder access to "everyone" and password protect that folder (so far I've just turned off permissions for anyone other than me)?

Also, Win2000Pro ? (work issue IBM T23 lappy, full permissions). I can see all the networked files on the laptop, but can't open them, get this error (no. 64 to be exact).
Now here's a clue however: I CAN'T ping my computer. Gives me request timed out. Using DLink DWL-650+, accesses the internet just fine. Thanks!

Thanks!
Alan
You need to learn about NTFS Permissions. The links you provided in the other thread should give you a good start.

Essentially you're not going to password protect your folders. Access will be controlled through permissions.

In a production environment I remove the "Everyone" group and give access to those users/groups that need access. "Everyone" is an unknown variable.

I'll give you this: be very careful about using "deny". Permissions are cumulative, but deny overrides everything.

You're confusing me. Just want to be clear and I have some questions.
- By "networked files" you mean "shared files", correct?
- Are specific files being shared, or is it the folders that are shared?
- Were you ever getting that "64" error before? Did you ever try to access the files before?
- Can the laptop access files on any of the other computers on the network?
- When you say you can't ping your computer, you mean from the laptop, right? Can you ping the other way?
- Can you ping your computer from any other computer?
- What access the Internet fine? Your computer? The laptop? The other computers?
- From the time everything was working on the network until the issues came up, what changed?

Yes.

Folders.

Never, there were times when nothing worked, but the network works fine right now when I try to access MY files FROM the other two computers (Dell 8100 Lappy, and Dell 2350).

- Can the laptop access files on any of the other
computers on the network?

Yes, it can access the other two, it can also ping the other two.

- When you say you can't ping your computer, you mean from the laptop, right? Can you ping the other way?

I can ping the lappy, it can't ping me. It can ping the other computers though, arghh.

- Can you ping your computer from any other computer?

I can ping my computer from the other two (except for that lappy). EDIT: Woah, I can't ping my computer from the other ones.

I only installed the network card in that computer today, never worked (yet).

It's freaking weird. I mean, I can even access the shared files on the upstairs computer from that lappy, but can't access files on my computer. And I can access the files on my computer from both the upstairs computer and the other lappy. -mad-

Another thing: the time btwn IBM turned on and IBM sees MSHOME domain (on which my computer and upstairs computer are) is around 4 minutes blink.gif
