The latest linksys firmware was unstable enough that i decided to give the latest DD-WRT a go. For whatever reason, i was having to factory reset the router every time there was a problem with the power or dsl connection.
Working great so far. Much more stable than the crappy linksys firmware.

DD-WRT v24 RC4 mini is what I installed.

Anyone recommend useful changes from the default DD-WRT settings?
Security, etc....

Definitely use QoS if you have a VoIP line and download stuff often.

If you're suffering from a weak wireless signal in parts of your house, considering increase the transmit power (I recall Diggler saying that you could safely bump the transmit power from the default 28mW to ~ 40-50mW).

Anyone know if this will work on the Buffalo routers with DD-WRT?

Depends on the buffalo device. They list which firmware you can use for each device.

There may also be pretty specific instructions for your device. Make sure to double check what requirements there are in the install.

If yours is a WRT54G v2, you should be able to install DD-WRT STANDARD or even DD-WRT VPN (my personal favorite). There's no need for you to be limited to "mini." With STANDARD you can enable a PPTP server. With VPN, you can enable a PPTP server, an OpenVPN Server, or both.

I've haven't switched to DD-WRT v24 yet (am still using v23), so I don't know what changes (if any) exist PPTP=wise and OpenVPN-wise under DD-WRT v24.

Had no problem with the Buffalo WHR-HGP54 from a couple weeks ago. I used the BAT file to simplify flashing. I stuck with latest stable version of v23.

QoS is important to ensure that high priorities get their bandwidth (ie VoIP)
I didn't turn my power up/down because I think my buffalo has its own amplifier so I don't need to
Security - go with what you used to have...as secure as possible, of course.

Then SAVE your settings!!! I unplugged my router to move it and I had to re-enter all my settings (including all twelve MACs!)
